Time flew by.
Today was her first official day at the Azure Atelier.
Yvette pushed open the heavy doors. Inside, Matthew Sutton stood waiting, his arms wide open and a warm smile on his face.
“Welcome back.”
Yvette felt a sudden prickle of tears in her eyes as she stepped forward and gave him a hug.
They held the embrace for a few seconds before pulling back.
Standing in the corner, Quade Lomax stared at the scene, his eyes practically bugging out of his head.
Mr. Sutton was famously professional. He kept a strict, polite distance from everyone, especially female colleagues.
Who the hell was this woman? And what exactly was her relationship with the boss?
He didn't have to wait long for his answer.
Once the shift officially started, Matthew led Yvette into the main restoration studio.
He clapped his hands, and the team of restorers paused their delicate work.
“Everyone, please stop what you're doing for a moment. I’d like to introduce someone. This is Yvette Yeats. Starting today, she will be our newest Senior Restorer.”
A heavy silence dropped over the room. The restorers exchanged uncertain glances before offering a polite, scattered round of applause.
Yvette could clearly read the reluctance in the room. They were only clapping out of respect for Matthew.
Quade scoffed internally.
The Azure Atelier operated on a strict hierarchy: Junior, Intermediate, Senior, and Master.
Juniors were essentially apprentices, shadowing the experienced staff for years.
Quade had spent almost four years just as a Junior. He was now in his sixth year at the Atelier and had only recently earned the title of Intermediate Restorer.
Why did she get to walk in off the street and immediately claim a Senior title?
Until today, Matthew was the only Senior Restorer in the entire building!
Resentment began to boil over in his chest.
“Hello everyone, I’m Yvette. I look forward to working with you all,” Yvette said, keeping her introduction brief.
The moment she finished, Quade let out a loud, mocking laugh. “Since you’re a *Senior*, I think we're the ones who will be needing *your* guidance.”
He heavily emphasized the words 'Senior' and 'guidance'.
Quade’s face darkened. A mere bachelor’s degree? That didn't even meet the minimum requirement to submit a resume to the Azure Atelier!
“I can personally guarantee that whether it’s theoretical knowledge or practical application, Yvette is more than a match for anyone in this room,” Matthew stated, his usual easygoing demeanor replaced by a sharp, authoritative tone.
“Mr. Sutton, are you absolutely insisting on keeping her here?”
“Yes,” Matthew nodded. “If anyone has an issue with my decision, you are welcome to hand in your resignation right now.”
Quade’s eyes widened in shock. “Fine. Good luck running the Atelier, Mr. Sutton.”
With that, he turned and started violently shoving his tools into a box.
The other colleagues rushed over, desperately trying to talk him down.
But Quade was notoriously stubborn and refused to back down.
“How about this,” Yvette said, her voice cutting clearly through the chaos. “I’ll start from the bottom as a Junior Restorer. I’ll assist Mr. Lomax and learn the ropes from him.”
She didn't want to put Matthew in a difficult position.
Besides, the fact that Quade had managed to reach the Intermediate level meant he had genuine talent.
She respected the craft too much to let real talent walk out the door over a misunderstanding.
