Yvette called Jabez again. The line rang endlessly, but no one picked up.

She lowered her eyes, deciding she would go back to their marital home tomorrow and wait for him there.

After washing up, she crawled into bed and finally went to sleep.

Morning light filtered through the windows, casting a warm glow over the carpet.

Yvette got up and headed straight to the Azure Atelier.

Her day was incredibly chaotic; she barely managed two bites of lunch before diving right back into the restoration lab.

As the sky began to darken, Yvette grabbed her bag and drove to the marital home.

"Ma'am, you're finally back," Lena greeted her the moment she heard the door open. "While you were away, Mr. Shelby came home twice. When he saw you weren't here, he left again."

Yvette paused mid-step. Jabez came back?

Was he finally ready to discuss the divorce?

"Is he home today?"

"No," Lena shook her head, then gently urged, "Ma'am, why don't you give him a call? If he hears your voice, I'm sure he'll come right back."

Yvette nodded and dialed Jabez's number.

This time, the call connected.

"Hello."

"What is it?" The man's deep, magnetic voice rumbled through the speaker.

Yvette had just opened her mouth to reply when a soft, incredibly gentle female voice drifted through the background. "Jabez, who's calling so late?"

Yvette suddenly felt a jarring sense of vertigo.

It felt as if *she* were the dirty little secret, the mistress Jabez was hiding in the shadows.

Then again, it made perfect sense. Willow was the woman Jabez proudly displayed to the world. Yvette was nothing more than the invisible Mrs. Shelby.

Perhaps terrified of making Willow jealous, Jabez's voice turned remarkably cold. "Whatever it is, it can wait until we're back at the old estate tomorrow."

Without even giving her the chance to object, he hung up.

Seeing the terrible pallor of Yvette's face, Lena stood silently to the side, not daring to speak.

"Don't you agree, Yvette?"

Yvette instantly grasped the venom layered beneath her words.

She was saying Yvette wasn't fit for Jabez, that their marriage was nothing more than a forced, awkward mistake.

"You're absolutely right, Mother. Things that don't fit should be thrown in the trash before they rot," Yvette replied, her eyes devoid of warmth.

With that, she turned back toward the stairs.

"Yvette, I heard you're working as a lowly intern at the Azure Atelier, running errands like a servant," Simon laughed, the sound incredibly grating.

"It just so happens a friend of mine has some calligraphy that needs restoring. You can do it for free. Consider it my charity to help boost your miserable career, so you don't get fired for being utterly useless."

Hearing his arrogant, patronizing tone, Yvette's face turned to stone. She snapped back, "You should be addressing me as your sister-in-law! Is calling your elders by their first name the kind of manners you were raised with?"

For years, Yvette had tolerated Simon's endless tantrums and disrespect just to keep the peace. She was officially done playing nice!

Simon's face twisted into an ugly sneer, staring at Yvette in pure, unadulterated shock.

Was this really the same pathetic, easily bullied Yvette? It was like looking at a completely different person.
