“Yvette, Simon is just a naive kid. Do you really have to be so petty over every little thing? Besides, you two are peers. It’s not like you’re his elder.”
Seeing Yvette fight back, Wynne furrowed her brows in frustration, immediately leaping to Simon’s defense.
Like a spoiled brat with someone backing him up, Simon instantly straightened his posture, looking at her with a smug, *what-are-you-going-to-do-about-it* expression.
Yvette let out a cold scoff.
Whenever Simon deliberately made things difficult for her, Wynne would suddenly go deaf, turning a blind eye and indulging his blatant disrespect.
But the moment the tables turned and Simon took a hit, her hearing was miraculously restored. She was quick to shield him and blame Yvette for being unreasonable.
Her so-called “kid” was a grown adult pushing six feet tall.
“There’s a saying about respecting your elders,” Yvette said, her eyes turning sharp. “Since you’re clearly too busy to teach him basic manners, I’m doing it for you. It’ll save people from whispering about how the second Shelby son lacks common courtesy. I’m only doing this for the family’s reputation, Wynne. I’m sure you understand.”
Wynne’s temples throbbed, her face cycling between shades of green and pale white.
Everything Yvette just said was a thinly veiled insult, implying Simon was raised without proper guidance. She was indirectly calling her a bad mother.
Was this how she treated her elders?
Ignoring the blazing anger radiating from the mother and son, Yvette turned and headed upstairs.
Simon stared at her unyielding back for a few seconds before plopping down on the sofa, seething with anger.
Yvette stayed upstairs until it was time for dinner. Jabez had returned, and Simon, looking visibly upset, was angrily venting to his brother.
He was clearly tattling.
Noticing her coming down the stairs, Simon laid it on even thicker. Jabez shifted his gaze to her, stared for a few seconds, and then looked away.
Yvette could see the scrutiny in his eyes; he seemed to have a hard time believing she had openly defied Wynne and reprimanded Simon tonight.
“Yvette, come sit next to me,” Sybil said, her face lighting up with a smile as soon as she saw her. She then looked at the men. “Jabez, Simon, time to eat.”
Yvette took the seat just to Sybil’s left.
Jabez barely spared it a glance before looking away, showing absolutely zero interest in the ring’s whereabouts.
Yvette’s gaze shifted to Jabez’s own ring finger.
It brought back the memory of when they first got married, right when she was supposed to slide the ring onto his finger.
He had dodged her hand, his handsome brows knitting together. “It’s in the way.”
His impatient expression and icy tone were still fresh in her mind.
“I took it off because I was afraid it might accidentally scratch the paintings during restoration, and I just forgot to put it back on today,” Yvette explained smoothly.
The truth was, the ring had already been mailed to the Shelby Group headquarters, right alongside the divorce papers.
She once believed that ring was a symbol of happiness. Now, it just felt like a shackle.
And she was about to break free from it.
