Jabez didn't agree immediately. Two seconds later, he gave a flat, “Alright.”
He stood up and walked out of the bedroom.
For a moment, Yvette couldn't tell if that meant he was going or not, but she had delivered the message. Whether he showed up was entirely up to him.
-
On the day of her uncle’s birthday, Yvette packed the gifts and drove to the Yeats estate.
Sitting on the sofa, Winifred saw her walk in alone, and the melancholy between her brows deepened.
“Yvette, didn't Jabez come with you?”
“Mom, he’s just too busy. He couldn't make the time.” Yvette opened a black velvet box. “This is the gift he sent for Uncle Lance.”
Inside rested an incredibly expensive calligraphy pen. Winifred stared at it without cracking a smile, simply reaching out to snap the box shut.
Her aunt, Joanne, poked her head out of the kitchen. “Yvette, come give me a hand!”
Yvette breathed a quiet sigh of relief and stood up, heading toward the kitchen.
“Coming, Aunt Joanne.”
Half an hour later.
Helen sat at the head of the table, with Yvette seated right next to Winifred.
Helen looked pointedly at Yvette. “Give Jabez a call and ask where he is.”
Yvette knew she had no choice but to make the call, otherwise, her grandmother would refuse to start dinner.
She dialed his number.
“Today is my uncle’s birthday. Are you still busy?”
“I am.”
Just as Yvette was about to say something else, a painfully familiar voice drifted through the receiver.
“Jabez, come help me take a look at this contract.”
Yvette’s knuckles went rigid around the phone. She quickly switched it to her other ear, terrified that Winifred might overhear Quentin’s voice and get hurt.
“Anything else?” his voice came through, cold and detached.
“No.”
The moment the word left her lips, he hung up with a crisp, decisive click.
It was a photo.
Quentin was seated at the head of a dining table, with Jabez sitting respectfully below him. The two men were clinking glasses, and Jabez purposely held his glass lower than Quentin’s in a gesture of deference. Both wore relaxed, genuine smiles.
Sitting beside them were Rhonda and Willow.
The whole scene looked exactly like a son-in-law meeting his fiancée's parents.
The typically aloof, unapproachable Jabez was actually willing to lower his head and play the respectful junior to a minor figure like Quentin.
She had been married to Jabez for seven years, and he had never once given her family a fraction of this respect!
He couldn't even be bothered to attend her uncle's birthday, yet here he was, bending over backward to please Willow’s family!
A violent surge of fury twisted in her chest, and her eyes burned red. She wanted nothing more than to march right up to Jabez and slap him across the face.
*Ding.*
She took several deep breaths, forcing her emotions down before tapping the new message.
Attending Physician: *[Ms. Yeats, have you made a decision? If you choose to terminate the pregnancy, we are approaching the absolute final deadline.]*
Yvette stared at the screen for a few seconds before typing out her reply.
