He stood quietly by the cabinet, the overhead crystal chandelier casting shadows that made his sharp features look even more strikingly defined.
Yvette gave him a single, passing glance before averting her eyes, picking up her teacup and staring blankly at the floating leaves.
Who knew what was going through her head.
Hearing her grandson’s question, Sybil looked pleasantly shocked that he was actually agreeing to hang the fertility charm in the house.
Her surprise quickly morphed into absolute delight. “I say we hang it right in the master bedroom! With its blessing, I’m sure you and Yvette will have a baby of your own soon. And you won't even have to lift a finger—my bones are still sturdy enough to help raise the little one.”
Jabez’s expression remained indifferent. “Whatever works. It’s up to you.”
Sybil practically beamed. Her grandson usually despised anything resembling spiritual or superstitious nonsense.
The fact that he was making an exception today meant a great deal.
In her mind, it proved that his relationship with Yvette was finally improving.
Otherwise, he never would have agreed.
Moreover, the fact that he didn't instantly shut down the talk of having a child proved he actually wanted one.
Yvette didn't read into it at all. Given how rarely Jabez was ever home, he couldn't care less where the painting was hung.
“Madam, Sir, Ma’am, dinner is ready,” Lena announced respectfully as she walked over.
Yvette leaned heavily on the back of the sofa, slowly pulling herself upright. Her injured knee refused to tolerate any sudden movements.
“What are you waiting for? Go help Yvette!” Sybil scolded, glaring at Jabez.
Yvette was already gripping the edge of the table to steady herself when Jabez strolled over, reaching out to support her arm.
“It’s fine. I can manage.”
She shifted away, dodging his grip entirely.
Jabez’s hand hovered in mid-air. He clearly hadn't expected her to reject his help, and a flash of bewilderment crossed his face.
“Yvette is injured. As her husband, shouldn't you sit next to her and make sure she’s comfortable?”
“Grandma, I hurt my leg, not my hands. I can feed myself just fine,” Yvette hastily declined.
She pictured Jabez actually feeding her and couldn't suppress a full-body shiver.
It was a horrifying thought.
They had been married for seven years. Even though there was one year where things had thawed between them, their daily interactions had always been nothing more than civil cohabitation, fulfilling their basic marital obligations.
Something as profoundly intimate as him feeding her had literally never happened.
She managed to get through dinner under Jabez’s forced supervision.
Night soon fell.
Sybil covered her mouth, stifling a yawn and rubbing her eyes. “I’m exhausted. I’m not heading back to the main estate tonight. I’ll just sleep in one of your guest rooms.”
