Yvette glanced at Jabez, fully expecting him to invent some excuse so they could sleep in separate rooms.

Catching her gaze, Jabez looked back at her and gave an almost imperceptible raise of his brow.

Yvette pressed her lips together, deciding not to stress over it.

Given how completely devoted he was to Willow, he wouldn't dare do anything that might upset her.

Which meant there was zero chance he would share a bed with Yvette!

Realizing that, she actually felt a wave of relief.

“It’s getting late. You two should head upstairs and rest,” Sybil said, watching them closely. “Jabez, help Yvette upstairs. And since she can't move around easily, make sure you help her wash up.”

“Okay,” Jabez agreed smoothly, smoothly wrapping an arm around Yvette to support her.

Yvette shot him a sideways glance.

She knew perfectly well he was only agreeing to put on a show for his grandmother.

It wasn't like the old woman was going to stand outside their bathroom door to verify if he actually bathed her.

Given her age and stiff joints, Sybil was staying in a guest room on the first floor.

She waited until the couple had disappeared at the top of the stairs before finally retreating to her room.

The second they were out of Sybil’s line of sight, Yvette yanked her arm free. “I can manage.”

Jabez didn't push the issue. “Do you need help showering?”

Yvette’s eyes widened in sheer disbelief.

Was he joking?

Sybil didn't have eyes and ears up here. Did he really need to take the acting this far?

“No.”

For a split second, she could have sworn she saw a flicker of amusement in his eyes, but when she looked again, his gaze was as icy and impenetrable as ever.

Clearly, she was just too tired.

“Alright,” Jabez nodded.

It was as if his offer had been nothing more than a mechanical check-box to complete the task Sybil had assigned him.

“I’ll take the guest room; you take the master,” Yvette suggested after a few seconds of thought.

He probably kept everything exactly like this for moments precisely like today—to fool his grandmother’s surprise inspections and keep their impending divorce a secret.

She grabbed a random nightgown and headed into the bathroom.

After freshening up, she gave herself a quick sponge bath, changed into her sleepwear, and slid into bed.

She thought she would toss and turn all night, but surprisingly, she slept like a rock.

Morning came.

Half-asleep, Yvette felt a heavy weight clamped tightly around her waist. Her eyes snapped open.

A muscular, powerful arm was draped across her stomach. But what made her entirely stiffen was the undeniable, burning hardness of the man pressed against her backside.

She reached down to grab his arm, intending to shove it off, when a hoarse, deeply rough voice murmured right by her ear.

“Don't move.”

Disgusted by the inappropriate intimacy, Yvette pushed his heavy hand away with significantly more force.

Jabez slowly opened his eyes. The moment reality registered, a flash of profound frustration darkened his handsome face.

“My apologies.”
