The private room's door swung shut, cutting off Milton's line of sight.
"Yvette, the list of those who passed the preliminary round for Solstice Auctions has been posted. The second round will take place in five days," Matthew announced.
"Yeah. Here's to us winning this competition together," Yvette said, a bright light shining in her clear, dark eyes.
The custody issue for her child was secured, and her career was on the upswing.
A brand new life was beginning!
-
The staff at the Azure Atelier who advanced to the next round were given the next few days off to prepare.
Yvette decided to take the free time to visit the Yeats family.
She stopped by the mall to buy her grandmother's favorite tea, some health supplements for her mom, and a nice skincare set for Aunt Joanne.
As she was walking out with her shopping bags, she bumped right into Quentin Huxley, Rhonda Yarrow, and Rhonda's niece, Maeve Yarrow.
Maeve was dripping in gaudy jewelry from her wrists to her neck, sporting flashy red nails that screamed tacky nouveau riche.
"Yvette, aren't you dressed a little shabbily?" Rhonda's disdainful eyes scanned her up and down. "Has the Yeats family become so broke they can't even afford a decent piece of jewelry for you?"
Yvette glanced down at herself. She was wearing a simple T-shirt, loose wide-leg trousers, and a pair of casual sneakers.
Compared to Rhonda's outfit, which easily cost tens of thousands, it did look a bit plain.
A smug smile played on Rhonda's lips, but to keep up her façade of gentle grace, she chastised, "Maeve, you can't speak like that. By seniority, you still have to call her your sister."
"I'm sorry, but my mother only gave birth to me," Yvette said flatly, her eyes icy.
"She's no sister of mine! My cousin is a Ph.D. graduate from abroad, and even Mr. Shelby of the Shelby Group is crazy about her. What the hell is she? She doesn't even deserve to be compared to Willow!" Maeve boasted arrogantly.
Rhonda's smile widened. "Willow truly is exceptionally outstanding among her peers."
Thinking of Willow, Quentin's face swelled with pride. He looked at Yvette, who remained stubbornly unfazed, and a flash of reproach crossed his eyes.
"Yvette, do you really have to speak like that? We are family. Why must you act this way?"
Yvette raised an eyebrow.
He allowed his biological daughter to be mocked to her face while defending someone with zero blood ties to him.
The lengths he would go to be Rhonda's lapdog were truly bottomless!
"If you want to be a lapdog, leave me out of it." Ignoring Quentin's livid expression, Yvette turned to leave.
"You probably don't know yet, do you? Mr. Shelby gave the Joyful Plaza project to the Huxley family," Maeve tilted her chin up, looking incredibly smug.
Her words successfully made Yvette stop in her tracks. She turned around, glaring at her sharply.
"What did you just say?"
"I said, Joyful Plaza was given to the Huxleys. If you don't believe me, go ask your uncle."
"That's what you get for upsetting my cousin. To coax her, Mr. Shelby handed the contract right to her. I highly suggest you take a detour whenever you see her from now on!"
"The more you mess with Willow, the more his heart aches for her. At this rate, your precious Yeats family will be bankrupt by next week."
A massive wave of shock crashed through Yvette's mind.
This daughter of his was just as stubborn and impossible to reason with as her sick mother.
Stepping out of the elevator just in time, Milton clearly heard Yvette declare that she would never divorce.
Just as he suspected.
She was still desperately clinging to her title as Mrs. Shelby.
Yvette strode away, only leaning heavily against a wall to gasp for air once she was out of the mall.
A faint cramp seized her lower abdomen. After resting for a few minutes, she dialed Lance Yeats's number.
"Uncle Lance, I saw the announcement regarding Joyful Plaza," Yvette asked directly. "Did Jabez have something to do with this?"
"Yvette, don't do anything rash. The Yeats family simply fell short in the bid. It has nothing to do with Mr. Shelby. Please don't let this minor business issue affect your relationship with him."
"I understand, Uncle."
Yvette hung up the phone and drove straight to the Shelby estate with chilling calm.
Sybil, Wynne, and Simon were all in the living room.
"Grandma. Mrs. Shelby," Yvette greeted them first. "Is Jabez home?"
"He's upstairs in a meeting," Sybil said cheerfully.
Knowing he was home, Yvette simply sat on the couch to wait.
"Yvette, I had a dream last night. I dreamt of a precious little girl calling me Great-Grandma. Tell me the truth, are you pregnant?"
