Yvette didn't call her 'Mom', simply replying evenly, "No one knows I'm Mrs. Shelby, so there's no way for me to embarrass the family. If I'm embarrassing anyone, it's the Yeats family."
"Since you're so worried I'll shame the Shelbys, how about I just address you as Mrs. Shelby when we're out?"
Wynne choked on her words, her face souring considerably.
What was she playing at? Was she throwing a tantrum over not getting public recognition?
She clearly had no self-awareness. She had been married for seven years without producing a single child, yet she had the audacity to act slighted by the Shelby family.
"Mrs. Shelby it is then," Wynne sneered coldly, picking up her pace.
Yvette followed unhurriedly behind her, her brain working on overdrive.
She needed an airtight excuse to avoid arousing suspicion.
The two of them pulled a number and waited in line.
The queue ahead of them was thinning out, and it would soon be Yvette's turn.
"Mrs. Shelby, please wait here for a moment. I'm going to run to the restroom."
She prayed that by the time she came out, they would have called the next person so she could be forced to draw a new ticket.
"Go on, hurry up," Wynne muttered, feeling even more irritated hearing Yvette actually address her so formally.
Yvette dawdled in the restroom for a solid ten minutes before finally coming out.
"Mrs. Shelby, did they call our number?"
There had only been one person ahead of them earlier. Surely, after ten minutes, her ticket had expired.
"Not yet."
"Will Yvette Yeats please proceed to Consultation Room 1," the loudspeaker announced.
Yvette's face froze. Wynne was already standing up and walking ahead.
Seeing Yvette still rooted to the spot, Wynne barked impatiently, "Yvette!"
Snapping out of it, Yvette slowly trudged into the consultation room.
The middle-aged female doctor glanced up at Yvette and asked, "What seems to be the problem?"
"Doctor, she's been married to my son for seven years and still hasn't gotten pregnant. We want to run some tests to see if there's something wrong with her physically," Wynne stated, taking a seat.
"Is the husband here?"
"No. Doctor, there's absolutely nothing wrong with my son. He's been in peak physical condition his whole life." Wynne shot a disdainful glare at Yvette. "She's the one with the frail constitution. Please give her a thorough check."
"To properly diagnose fertility issues, it's best if both partners are examined. But since he isn't here today, we'll start with her." The doctor printed out a requisition form. "Take this and get these tests done first. Bring the results back to me."
"I have something to take care of, so I'm leaving. Wait here for the results yourself. Call me when you have them, and we'll head back to the estate together."
Yvette pretended she hadn't heard the phone call at all and asked innocently, "Mrs. Shelby, aren't you going to wait for the results with me?"
Wynne's phone buzzed again—they were rushing her. She hastily grabbed her designer bag. "No, I have business to attend to. Wait by yourself."
Yvette nodded dutifully.

Wynne rushed into Mrs. Vance's home like a whirlwind and took her seat at the card table.
Her regular playing partners were all wives of Kingsbrook's most elite families.
"Come here, sweetie, say hi to Grandma Wynne," Mrs. Vance cooed, holding a chubby little toddler in her arms, smiling brightly at Wynne.
The little girl gave a gummy, adorable smile and babbled, "Gamma."
A wave of genuine envy washed over Wynne's eyes. She desperately wanted a sweet little granddaughter of her own too.
For a split second, she even thought that even if the child came out of Yvette's belly...
It might actually be okay.
