"Where did you run off to today?" Mrs. Morgan asked, shuffling her cards.
"Just the hospital..." Wynne Farrell caught herself. "Nowhere important."
"The hospital? What for?"
"Just an old ailment acting up." Wynne picked up her hand, eager to change the subject. "Come on, let's play."
The other three women exchanged a look but didn't push.
"Wynne, Jabez has been married for years now. Why haven't they had a child yet?" Mrs. Godfrey, sitting across the table, asked with feigned innocence.
Wynne shot her a sharp look. "Jabez is busy. Running the Shelby Group is a massive undertaking—he was just negotiating an overseas merger yesterday. With great power comes great responsibility, and as his mother, I'm not going to let domestic trivialities distract him."
Mrs. Godfrey had married young, and her son had followed suit. Even though her son and Jabez were the same age, her son already had preteens.
Mrs. Morgan and Mrs. Eustace chuckled softly.
They all knew Wynne was taking a subtle jab at Mrs. Godfrey's son for being incompetent.
After all, it was an open secret in their circle that the Godfrey patriarch had given up on his son and was already grooming his grandson to take over.
Mrs. Godfrey gritted her teeth. "You can make money anytime. But you can't just buy a child whenever you want one."
That struck a nerve.
No matter how much money the Shelby family had, they needed an heir. They couldn't just hand the empire over to a distant relative.
Seeing Wynne's expression darken, Mrs. Morgan smoothly intervened. "Oh, we don't understand business anyway. Let's just focus on the game."
Wynne had come today hoping to win back the money she'd lost earlier in the week, but her luck was abysmal.
She was the only one losing, bleeding chips to the other three.
By the end, she was down two million.
Her presence was suffocating. She slowly swept her cold, emotionless gaze over the three women, then raised her hand.
Panic gripped Mrs. Godfrey's chest. She scrambled up, practically lunging to grab Wynne's designer bag and hand it over.
She forced a sycophantic smile. "Here you go. You didn't have to come all the way back! A quick call and I would have had it sent straight to you."
Wynne didn't say a word. She just gave her one last freezing glare, turned, and walked away.
Mrs. Godfrey turned pale.
She had only made those comments because Wynne always acted so superior, and she wanted to knock her down a peg.
She had never actually meant to offend her.
Their family had major contracts with the Shelby Group. If her petty gossip ruined their business...
She didn't dare think about the consequences. Grabbing her own bag, she scooped up her granddaughter and practically fled.
