Yvette gripped the heavy toy sword tightly with both hands, her nerves stretched to the limit as she held her breath and slowly edged closer to the little girl.

Sensing the child's terror, the Cane Corso snarled even more viciously.

"Bark! Bark! Bark!"

As the massive black dog lunged at the girl, Yvette raised her arms high and swung the plastic sword down hard against the animal's neck.

The beast collapsed to the ground, letting out a pained yelp.

Seizing the opportunity, Yvette scooped up the little girl. The child pointed a trembling finger in the distance. "My dad is over there."

Yvette sprinted as fast as her legs could carry her in the direction the girl pointed.

Her expression was deadly serious, every muscle tense. Getting bitten would be disastrous for either of them.

Especially for her, with the baby in her womb.

But she simply couldn't stand by and watch a child get mauled.

"Bark! Bark!" the beast snapped from behind, launching itself into a frantic sprint after Yvette's retreating figure.

Yvette pushed herself to run, but with the extra weight of the child in her arms, she couldn't move very fast.

The sound of the dog's paws hitting the ground grew louder and closer.

Her breathing turned ragged, a cold chill shooting straight up her spine.

The vicious animal opened its massive jaws, baring razor-sharp fangs as it leaped toward Yvette's back.

With lightning reflexes, Yvette threw herself flat onto the ground.

She could feel the rush of wind as the heavy beast sailed right over her.

The dog landed solidly on its paws, then whipped around, glaring at Yvette with even more lethal intent.

This wasn't good.

"Daddy! Daddy!" the little girl screamed, her voice tearing through the air.

Hearing the child's desperate cries, Yvette mentally cursed the father. What an idiot!

Yvette was already physically fragile, and pregnancy had only made her weaker. Right now, her body felt completely drained of energy.

It didn't dare to attack again and slinked away with its tail between its legs.

Once he was sure the dog was gone, Milton dropped to his knees and pulled Nola into a tight embrace.

His eyes grew red-rimmed as he repeatedly murmured apologies. "I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry. It's all my fault. I didn't protect you."

Nola gripped his shirt with her tiny hands, refusing to let go, crying so hard her face was covered in tears and snot.

Milton felt a warm dampness spreading across his left shoulder. The little body in his arms was shaking uncontrollably, clearly terrified out of her mind.

His heart ached, completely consumed by guilt.

He gently patted Nola's small back, murmuring soft words of comfort to calm her down.

Three minutes later, Nola finally peeked her head out from Milton's embrace.

"Dad, this lady saved me."

Milton followed Nola's gaze and saw Yvette slumped on the ground.

Her hair was a messy tangle, and there was a painful scrape on her elbow, already oozing beads of blood.
