Ride With Me novel Paige and Jace by Kylie K Chapter 10
CHAPTER 9-1
The laughter around the clubhouse faded so quickly that it almost felt unnatural. One moment children were running across the yard chasing a football while Diesel barked excitedly behind them and the next very conversation had slowed as a black luxury sedan rolled through the front gates.
I recognised the car immediately and my stomach sank.
“What is he doing here?” I whispered.
Charles Lawson climbed out without looking at anyone else. He wore another expensive suit that probably cost more than every tool in my workshop combined and his polished shoes looked ridiculous on the dusty gravel.
He spotted me standing beside Emma almost instantly and there wasdn’t even the smallest hint of surprise on his face.
It was as though he’d expected to find me here all along.
Emmal quietly placed a reassuring hand on my arm.
“You alright?” She asked and I nodded automatically.
“I will be.” I said.
The truth was a little different. My father had a habit of walking into a room and making everyone
else feel small. He’d spent years perfecting that talant and I doubted he’d forgotten how to use it.
The children slowly wandered closer to their parents and Hunder and Derek exchanged a quick glance before subtly moving nearer without making it obvious.
Jace didn’t move at all. He just simply watched as Charles stopped a few meters away.
“So it’s true.” Charles said and I crossed my arms.
“Good afternoon to you to.” I said and his eyes swept across the clubhouse yard.
“I heard rumors.” Charles said.
“They’re usually more entertaining than reality.” I said,
“You’ve surrounded yourself with bikers.” He said.
“I’ve surrounded myself with customers.” I said.
“They’re criminals.” He said.
“They’re eating potato salad.” I said.
“Don’t be smart.” He frowned.
“I’ve been told it’s one of my better qualities.” I said.
Nobody laughed and the atmosphere had become far too tense.
