I stared at my mother’s message for several seconds, and although I had spent years wishing she would finally reach out to me, the words on the screen didn’t bring the relief had expected.
They brought questions. Too many questions
Please don’t tell Jace yet.
That sentence bothered me more than anything else.
If this was simply about Uncle Will, then why did she want the conversation kept from Jace?
I slipped my phone into my pocket as Jace walked toward me.
“What did she say?” He asked as I looked at him.
“She wants to meet.” I said.
“About what?” He asked.
“Uncle Will.” I said as his expression tightened.
“What exactly did she say?” He asked and I hesitated.
“She didn’t explain.” I said as Jace studied my face.
“You don’t have to meet her alone.” He said.
“I know.” I said.
“I can come.” He said.
“She specifically asked me not to tell you.” I said and his jaw tightened.
“That’s exactly why I’m concerned.” He said.
“I understand.” I said as he reached for my hand.
“Just be careful.” He said.
“I will.” I said.
The next afternoon, I drove across town and parked several streets away from where my mother had asked me to meet her.
I didn’t know why she had chosen such a quiet location, but the empty café at the end of the street seemed deliberately chosen.
I checked my reflection in the car mirror, brushed a strand of hair away from my face, and took a slow breath. Then I walked inside.
My mother was already sitting in the back corner.

Victoria looked older than I remembered, although perhaps it was simply because I was seeing her differently now.
She looked tired. Not physically tired. Emotionally tired so I walked toward the table.
“Hi, Mum.” I said and she looked up.
“Paige.” She said as I sat opposite her.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke and then she pushed a coffee toward me.
“I ordered this for you.” She said as I looked at it.
“Thank you.” I said and she nodded so I wrapped both hands around the cup.
“You said you wanted to talk about Uncle Will.” I said.
“I do.” She said.
“What do you know?” I asked as she looked toward the window.
“More than I should.” She said.
“That isn’t an answer.” I said.
“I know.” She sighed.
“I’ve been watching what has been happening around you.” She added and my stomach tightened.
“What do you mean?” I asked.
“The rumours, the fires, the people watching the shop.” She said and I stared at her.
“You knew?” I asked.
“I suspected.” She said.
“How long?” I asked as Victoria looked down.
“Long enough.” She said as my chest tightened.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” I asked.
“Because I was afraid.” She said.
“Of what?” I asked.
“Of making everything worse.” She said and I shook my head.
“You don’t get to decide that for me.” I said.
“I know.” She said.
Her voice was quiet and that surprised me.
My mother rarely admitted when she was wrong.

<CHAPTER 95-4—
Charlotte has changed.” She said as stared at her.
“What?” Lasked.
“Charlotte.” She said.
“What about her?” I asked.
“She’s different.” Victoria said.
“Different how?” I asked and Victoria lowered her voice.
“She’s become secretive and she’s been spending time with people I don’t recognize.” Victoria said.
“Who?” I asked.
