The morning started with the sound of an impact wrench, the smell of fresh coffee, and Mia complaining about the printer. I smiled as I walked into the office.

“What did it do now?” I asked.

“It ate another invoice.” She said.

“Did you threaten it?” I asked.

“I did.” She said.

“Did that work?” I asked.

“No, but I felt better.” She said and I laughed and set my coffee beside the computer.

The workshop was already busy, and three motorcycles were waiting near the entrance while Ben worked on an engine at the far bench.

The waiting list was still growing, and every time I looked at the appointment book, I couldn’t quite believe how much Lawson Customs had changed.

A few months ago, I had been worried about keeping the doors open. Now I was preparing to buy another building.

I glanced through the window toward the vacant workshop next door and the thought still made my stomach flutter.

“You’ve been staring at that building all morning.” Mia said.

“I’m thinking.” I said.

“About expansion?” She asked.

“About everything.” I said and she smiled.

“You deserve to be excited.” She said and I nodded.

“I am.” I said.

Before we could say anything else, the bell above the front door rang and I looked up.

The man standing there made me freeze.

Charles Lawson.

For a moment, I couldn’t move.

He looked exactly as I remembered, although there was something different in his expression. He wasn’t angry. He wasn’t cold. He was actually smiling.

“Paige.” He said and I straightened.

“Charles.” I said as Mia looked between us.

Charles walked farther into the shop and glanced around.

“Business is doing well.” He said.

“It is.” I said.

“I’ve heard.” He said and I kept my expression neutral.

“Why are you here?” I asked and he smiled.

“I heard about the expansion.” He said and my stomach tightened.

“News travels quickly.” I said.,

“It does.” He said as he looked around the workshop again.

“You’ve done a lot with this place.” He added.

I didn’t know whether that was meant as praise, so I simply nodded.

“Thank you.” I said and Charles walked toward the counter.

“I wanted to congratulate you.” He said.

“For what?” I asked.

“Your success.” He said and I stared at him.

“Okay.” I said as he smiled.

“I mean it.” He said but I didn’t answer.

Charles had never been someone I trusted easily, and I wasn’t about to forget everything simply because he had walked through my door with a friendly expression.

He reached into his jacket and pulled out a business card.

“I’d like to offer you something.” He said and I looked at the card.\

“What?” I asked.

“Investment.” He said and I stared at him.

“No.” I said

“You haven’t even heard the offer.” He said.

“I don’t need to.” I said.

“Paige.” He said.

“I appreciate you coming here, but I don’t need your money.” I said and his expression tightened slightly.

“I’m not trying to buy control.” He said.

didn’t say you were.” I said.

want to help.” He said.

“I can manage.” I said and he sighed.

“I know you’re proud.” He said.

“I’m not being proud.” I said.

“Then what are you being?” He asked.

“Careful.” I said.

That seemed to catch him off guard and I folded my arms.

“Lawson Customs is doing well, and the expansion is already financed.” I said.

“Partially.” He said.

“Yes.” I said.
