CHAPTER 133-1

Sunday mornings at the Iron Vipers clubhouse had developed their own rhythm, because nobody seemed to know how to have a quiet weekend anymore.

I woke to the sound of children running down the hallway, and I opened my eyes while Jace was still asleep beside me.

For a few seconds, I stayed where I was and listened.

Someone laughed downstairs, a door opened, and then I heard Mason yelling something about somebody stealing his coffee.

I smiled because this was home now. So I slipped out of bed and headed into the bathroom, where I showered, brushed my teeth, and pulled my hair into a messy ponytail before changing into jeans, sneakers, and a comfortable T-shirt.

When I walked downstairs, the clubhouse was already crowded.

Emma was carrying a basket of folded towels, Mia was helping organize food in the kitchen, and several of the kids were racing through the common room while Diesel followed behind them.

“Morning.” Emma called.

“Morning.” I said as she looked at me.

“You ready?” She asked.

“For what?” I asked as she pointed toward the back doors.

“The football game.” She said and I stared at her.

“What football game?” I asked.

“The one Mason has been planning all week.” She said and I groaned.

“I wasn’t informed.” I said.

“You were.” She said.

“I wasn’t listening.” I said and Emma laughed.

“That sounds more accurate.” She said.

Jace walked into the kitchen, already dressed in jeans and a club shirt.

“You coming?” Jace asked.

“Apparently.” I said and he smiled.

“You’ll have fun.” He said.

“That’s what everyone keeps saying.” I said as he kissed my cheek.

CHAFTERJA

“Because it’s true.” He said.

Outside, the clubhouse yard had been transformed into a makeshift football field.

The adults were standing on one side, while the kids were gathered together on the other and Mason was holding the football.

“We’re going down.” Mason said and Derek shook his head.

“You’re not beating the kids.” Derek said and Mason looked offended.

“I’ve got skill.” Mason said.

“You’ve got a bad knee.” Derek said.

“My knee is fine.” Mason said and Emma called from behind us.

“Your knee complained when you climbed the stairs yesterday.” Emma said and everyone laughed as Mason pointed at her.

“You’re supposed to support me.” Mason said.

“I support you emotionally.” Emma said and I laughed as Jace handed me a pair of gloves.

“Why do I need these?” I asked.

“You’ll find out.” He said.

“I don’t like the sound of that.” I said.

The first game started with the adults having possession, and within seconds, Mason was running across the yard while three kids chased him.

He threw the ball toward Derek and Derek caught it, but Noah immediately grabbed onto his waist.

“You can’t tackle me.” Derek said and Noah laughed.

“I just did.” Noah said and Derek looked at Mason.

“Your team is cheating.” Derek said.

“They’re children.” Mason said.

“Exactly.” Derek said.

I was laughing so hard that I barely noticed the ball flying toward me.

“Paige!” Someone yelled so I turned.

The football was coming straight toward me and I reached for it, but it bounced off my hands.

“Catch it!” Someone else yelled.

“I am trying!” I said.

The ball hit the grass, and I chased after it and Derek ran toward the same spot.
