CHAPTER 16-1

Charlotte arrived exactly on time and that alone made me suspicious.

She had spent most of her life making other people wait because she believed her time was more

valuable than everyone else’s, so watching her black Harley glide into the parking lot at precisely

nine o’clock felt strangely unnatural.

I stepped out from beneath the hood if an old Softail and wiped my hands on a clean/shop towel

as Ben looked through the office window.

“Customer?” Ben asked.

“My sister.” I said and his smile disappeared.

“The famous one?” He asked.

“The infamous one.” I said.

He looked at Charlotte climbing gracefully off the motorcycle dressed in designer jeans, expensive boots and a leather jacket that still looked at though it had never seen rain.

“I don’t think she’s every changed engine oil.” Ben said.

“I’d bet my toolbox she hasn’t.” I said.

Charlotte removed her helmet and smiled as though we were the closest sisters in the world.

“Paige.” She said.

“Charlotte.” I said.

She looked around the garage while slowly taking in the packed service bays and the waiting motorcycles as the customers sitting in the office.

“It seems business had improve.” She said.

“It has.” I said.

“Good for you.” She said and I smiled politely.

“It usually helps when people pay their invoices.” I said.

Ben suddenly beecame fascinated with organizing sockets.

Probably a smart decision.

Charlotte walked around her motorcycle while inspecting it from every angle.

“I’ve notice a strange vibration.” She said.

“When?” I asked.

“Sometimes.” She said.

“That’s incredibly specific.” I said.

“It happens while I’m riding.” She said.

“I assumed as much.” I said and she sighed dramatically.

“I forgot how sarcastic you are.” She said.

“I forgot how vague you are.” I said but she ignored the comment.

“I’d like a full inspection.” She said.

“No problem.” I said.

I rolled the motorcycle onto the lift while Charlotte wandered through the workshop like someone inspecting property she intended to purchase.

She ran one perfectly manicured finger across a tool chest before looking at the tiny streak of dust

she collected.

“You really should clean more often.” Charlotte said and I looked around the spotless garage.

“I was waiting until someone invesnted self dusting wrenches.” I said.

A couple of customers quietly laughed and Charlotte’s smile tightened.

“I suppose your standards have changed since moving in here.” She said.

“My standards improved.” I said and she glanced toward the apartment stairs.

“I still can’t believe you actually live above a garage.” She said.

“I still can’t believe you’re surprised.” I said.

“You grew up in a mansion.” She said.

grew up in a museum where nobody was allowed to touch anything.” I said and she folded her

arms.

“You always exaggerated.” She said.

“I wish I did.” I said.

Without waiting for another delay I began inspecting the Harley.

The motorcycle itself was practically new, the tires looked good, brake pads had barely worn in and the engine sounded healthy.

There wasn’t much wrong with it besides a slightly loose clutch cable and a mirror that needed

tightening.
