CHAPTER 145-2

“I’mstill angry with her sald.

“I know.” She said.

“I still remember what happened.” I said.

“I know that too.” She said.

“I’mnot ready to forgive her.” I said and Emma smiled.

“Nobody said you had to.” She said and I looked at her.

“But I do feel less angry.” I said.

“That’s a good thing.” She said and I nodded.

“It feels strange.” I said.

“Peace usually does when you have been fighting for a long time.” She said and I smiled at that.

“Did you rehearse that?” I asked and Emma laughed.

“No, but I’ve known you long enough to know you needed to hear it.” She said.

Jace walked into the workshop carrying two coffees.

“I brought reinforcements.” Jace said and Emma took one immediately.

“You are learning.” Emma said.

“I’ve been married to Paige long enough to know coffee solves approximately forty percent of her problems.” Jace said and I took the other cup.

“What solves the other sixty percent?” I asked.

“Food, sleep, and me agreeing with you.” He said and Emma laughed.

“That last one might be the most difficult.” Emma said and Jace looked at me.

“How are you feeling?” Jace asked as I took a sip.

“Better.” I said as his eyebrows lifted slightly.

“Really?” He asked.

“Really.” I asked and he studied me for a moment, then smiled.

“Good.” He said.

The rest of the afternoon passed quietly, and that felt like a gift.

I worked on a motorcycle while Ben handled another repair, Mia caught up on paperwork, and the Iron Vipers finished securing the last damaged section of fencing.

Nobody mentioned Victor for several hours Nobody talked about the recording. Nobody discussed Mr. Black.

For once, we simply worked.

When the afternoon sun began fading, I walked into Uncle Will’s office again.

The flowers were still sitting on his desk and I picked up Victoria’s note and read it one more time.

I still didn’t know whether I could forgive her. I did know that I no longer wanted to spend every waking moment being angry.

That was enough for today and I placed the note beneath the vase and walked back toward the workshop where Jace was waiting near the front door.

“We should head home.” He said and I nodded.

“Give me five minutes.” I said and he smiled.

“I will give you ten.” He said.

I locked the office, checked the workshop, and made sure the new temporary window was secure before shutting off the lights.

As I stepped outside, my phone rang and I looked at the screen. The name made my stomach tighten.

Charles Lawson.

“Hello?” I answered.

His voice was calm, but there was something serious beneath it.

“Paige, I need to speak with you.” Charles said and I glanced toward Jace.

“About what?” I asked.

“I would rather explain that in person.” He said and I hesitated.

“Charles, we have already talked.” I said.

“I know.” He said as his voice softened.

“But this is different.” He added.

I felt the small sense of peace I had found that afternoon begin slipping away.

“When do you want to meet?” I asked.

“Tomorrow morning.” He said.

“Where?” I asked and there was a pause.

“Somewhere private.” He said.

I looked at Jace again and he was watching my face now but Charles continued.
