CHAPTER 23-1
Monday morning started before sunrise and I woke to the familiar sound of rain tapping lightly against the apartment windows and for the first time in months, my first thought wasn’t about
overdue bills.
Instead, I wondered how many motorcycles were already waiting downstairs and that alone felt
like a miracle.
I showered, brushed my teeth and pulled on my usual grease stained jeans and faded black band t-shirt and then tied my hair into a ponytail before making coffee and two slices of toast.
The apartment smelled faintly of fresh coffee and engine oil drifting up from the garage belong.
It smelled like home and I carried my mug downstairs and unlocked the front door of Lawson
Customs.
Three customers were already waiting.
“You know we don’t open for another fifteen minutes, right?” I asked and the older rider grinned.
“We figured we’d beat the line.” He said.
“What lien?” I asked and he pointed behind himself.
I looked past him and nearly dropped my coffee.
Four more motorcycles had just turned into the parking lot and Ben arrived a few moments later, stopped beside me and stared at the growing line.
“I think we’re popular.” Ben said.
“I think we’re in trouble.” I said and he laughed.
“I’ve never heard someone complain about having customers.” He said.
“I’ll complain once I run out of hours in the day.” I said.
The morning disappeared in a clur of service bookings, phone calls, inspections and paperwork.
Every second customer seemed to say exactly the same thing.
“The Iron Vipers sent me.” They would say.
“I heard you’re the best mechanic around.” Another said.
“Hunter said you’d fix it properly the first time.” Another one said.
“I’ve been trying three other shops but Jace told me to come here.” One saud.

By ten o’clock every service bay was occupied and by eleven motorcycles filled half the parking lot.
Hooked down at my appointment book and sighed.
“We’re booked solid for a month.” I said and Ben smiled proudly.
“That’s a good problem.” He said.
“It is. But it’s still a problem.” I said.
The office phone ran before I could finish speaking and I answered while tightening a missor on an
old Road Glide.
“Lawson Customs.” I answered.
“Morning Paige.” A familiar voice said.
“Morning George.” I said.
“I’ve got another customer heading your way.” He said and I started laughing.
“George, I’m running out of room.” I said.
“That’s not what you said three months ago.” He said.
“No. Back then I was praying someone would walk through the door.” I said.
“You got your wish.” He said.
“I should’ve been more specific.” I said.
George chuckled before hanging up and Ben looked around the workshop.
“I don’t think we can keep doing this by ourselves.” Ben said.
“I know.” I said.
I hated admitted it. The garage had grown faster than either of us expected and I was spending almost as much time answer phones and writing invoices as I was fixing motorcycles.
That wasn’t why I became a mechanic. A loud metallic clatter echoed through the workshop and I slowly turned around.
Ben stood frozen beside an engine resting on the workbench.
“What happened?” I asked and he smiled awkwardly.
“Nothing exploded.” He said and I looked at the engine.
Then I looked at the transmission housing and then back at Ben.
