Charlotte’s POV

I had spent most of my life learning how to hide things.

I learned how to smile when I was angry, how to lie when I was afraid, and how to make

people believe I knew more than I actually did.

Now I was sitting inside Lawson Customs with a file open in front of me, and for the first

time in years, I wanted the truth to come out even if it made me look terrible.

Ethan stood across the desk while Paige and Jace waited nearby.

“You said you recognized Vanessa Reed’s name.” Ethan said.

“I did.” I said.

“And you said she knew about the warehouse.” Ethan said.

“Yes.” I said as he opened another folder.

“Then tell us everything you remember.” Ethan said and I swallowed.

“There was a company.” I started.

“What company?” Ethan asked.

“I don’t remember the exact name.” I said as Ethan waited.

“It was connected to our father’s business.” I added as Paige looked at me.

“Our father?” She asked and I nodded.

“Charles.” I said and her expression tightened slightly.

“What did he have to do with it?” She asked.

“Nothing illegal.” I said but I said it quickly because I knew how it sounded.

“I mean, he had business dealings with the people who owned it, but I don’t believe he knew

what they were doing.” I added as Jace crossed his arms.

“Who owned it?” Jace asked as I stared at the paperwork.

“An old associate of Dad’s.” I said.

“Richard Hale.” I said and Ethan immediately started typing.

“Tell me about him.” Ethan said.

“Richard had several companies, and Dad worked with him years ago.” I said as Paige looked

confused.

“Why have I never heard of him?” She asked.

“Because Dad didn’t talk about every business associate with us.” I said and I hesitated.

“He was around when I was younger, but I barely remember him.” I added as Ethan looked up.

“Do you know which company was involved?” Ethan asked as I pointed toward the

paperwork.

“That one.” I said and he followed my finger.

“Ridgeway Industrial Supply?” Ethan asked.

“Yes.” I said as Paige stared at the page.

“That company belonged to our father’s associate?” Paige said.

“Richard Hale owned it.” I said and Ethan immediately began searching through records.

“Interesting.” Ethan said.

“What?” I asked and he turned the laptop slightly.

“Ridgeway was registered under another person for several years, but the original ownership

records list Richard Hale.” Ethan said as Paige looked at me.

“Did Dad know?” She asked.

“I don’t know.” I said.

The answer sounded weak. I knew that but I also knew my father well enough to understand that he could be careless about things happening beneath him, especially when money and

business were involved.

“He might have signed contracts without knowing how the company was being used.” I said

and Jace looked at Ethan.
