She had no idea how she managed to stand up straight that day.
She just remembered the metallic taste of blood in her mouth. She wanted to catch her breath, but her legs were completely numb and trembling. She could do nothing but gasp for air as she stood across the hall, locking eyes with him through the crowd.
That was exactly when Gwyneth stepped forward, pouting playfully. "You guys are so mean! Stop laughing."
Her desperate panic must have looked incredibly stupid and hilarious to them, because the laughter didn't stop.
Clinton rubbed the back of his neck, looking slightly sheepish. "Sorry about that, Yanet. It's my birthday, so we were playing Truth or Dare."
Yanet didn't even look at him. She just walked straight toward Harlan.
Harlan watched her limp over, his eyes dropping to her legs.
She had trained in dance her entire life. Her legs were incredibly toned and powerful, insured for millions. And right now, a massive, bloody gash tore across her knee.
Harlan's smug smile instantly vanished. "What happened to you?"
Yanet just stared at him. Once upon a time, she had loved his smile. It had always been so bright, so warm, so full of life.
She had always been quiet and reserved, never the life of the party like Harlan. She used to envy how easily he drew people in, and she had genuinely loved seeing him happy.
But in that moment, the amount of pain radiating from her leg was perfectly matched by the crushing disappointment she felt looking at his face.
"So you weren't hurt. You were just making a fool out of me, is that it?" Yanet's cold, calm voice cut through the hallway.
The group of guys exchanged uncomfortable looks.
"Come on, it was just a joke. Don't be so dramatic. You're ruining the vibe. Is your leg okay?"
Clinton laughed awkwardly. "Yeah, how'd you even mess yourself up that bad? Did you hurt yourself anywhere else?"
Yanet kept her eyes locked on Harlan. "Alright. I have my answer."
