Rogue Tide, Clean Heart novel Chapter 6

"What about last night?"

"I didn't exactly have the chance to bring it up," Yanet murmured, thinking of how completely disoriented he had made her.

"Princess is a good girl. She likes you."

Yanet shot him a highly skeptical look, her eyes practically screaming: How could you possibly know that?

Just as she was mentally side-eyeing him, Princess came trotting happily back into the kitchen. The dog dropped a programmable floor button from her mouth, placed her heavy paw on it, and pressed down.

A robotic female voice announced, "I LOVE YOU."

Yanet stared at Barrett in shock. The man simply smirked, looking entirely unsurprised. "Told you she'd like you."

Yanet couldn't help herself. "She doesn't just do that to every guest who walks through the door, does she?"

"My dog is exactly like me."

"Meaning?"

"Picky."

Before Yanet could even process the weight of that statement, Barrett glanced at the bowl of greens she had set out for herself.

"You just eat grass for breakfast? What are you, a bird?"

"...Birds don't eat grass."

"Not the point. Does that actually fill you up?"

"I'm having oat milk and whole-wheat toast, too. I have to maintain my weight. The dance company is extremely strict about it. Do you need me to make you something?"

"Look at you, being the perfect little wife," Barrett chuckled. He turned to look at the dog. "Princess, you need to watch your weight too. Look at you. Five miles and you're panting like a mess."

Princess let out a tragic whimper and dropped her head, clearly offended by the mention of her diet.

Yanet was still trying to figure out Barrett's personality. "Um, can I ask you a personal question?"

Barrett poured himself a glass of ice water. "Hmm?"

"When we were set up for the blind date, your profile said you were a single dad. So... where's the kid?"

"She's literally sitting on the floor begging you for food. Toss her a piece of your grass," Barrett replied smoothly. Princess looked like she was about to cry.
