Chapter 224 So Sudden
Margaret hurried to say, “No, this is all happening far too fast.”

“It is not too fast,” Theodore replied calmly. “Ours has never been a dramatic, whirlwind connection. As you said, plain and quiet is what makes real life. Ordinary days are meant to be calm and steady. To me, you are the perfect person to stand beside me as my wife.”
His words stirred Margaret’s heart deeply, yet she still shook her head. “Getting married right away is truly too hasty.”
Theodore asked, “Then what pace would you consider right?”
Margaret said, “We don’t have to marry to let time test our hearts. We can get to know each other slowly without a formal marriage vow.”
“How can time test us if you refuse to marry me?” Theodore said softly. “You clearly wish to stay close to
me.”
Margaret sighed, “I do, but I refuse to commit my entire life so rashly.”
Theodore stated, “If your heart is inclined toward me, then give us a chance to try.”
Margaret fell completely lost for words–she simply could not argue against him.
Taking a slow breath, she relented. “We could try, but…”
“Then we shall try.” A hint of eagerness lingered in Theodore’s tone, as if fearing Margaret would change her mind.
Margaret said helplessly, “If we’re only trying this out, no one can know about it. We’ll court each other privately and see if we truly suit one another. If our feelings grow steady and we fit well, as you say, then I’ll agree to marry you. But if after spending time together we realize we’re not right for each other, we’ll part quietly and never disturb one another again. That’s what it means to give it a try—to put it plainly, it’s courting first before marriage.”
“Courting…” The term was entirely unfamiliar to Theodore, yet he understood the general meaning from her explanation. “You mean you’re willing to try with me?”
Margaret said, “You could put it that way, but…”
“When should I send the marriage proposal?” Theodore’s voice held clear impatience,
Margaret was about to reply when Cyan’s voice came from outside the door. “Prince Theodore, Ms. Hickman has arrived.”
Margaret’s expression stiffened slightly.
Ms. Hickman… Myrna?
The thought of her instantly dampened Margaret’s mood. She ignored Theodore’s unfinished question and said, “Since you have an important guest to see, I shall take my leave first.”

“There’s no need.” Theodore had already risen from the hot spring, slipping on a bathrobe casually before stepping forward to stop her. “She only comes to speak of businesses. You may wait for me in my study, and I’ll come find you afterward.”
“I’d rather not,” Margaret said calmly. “You have matters to attend to. I’ll come back tomorrow. I ought to head home now anyway.”
She turned to leave.
Sensing her sudden coldness, Theodore grabbed her wrist firmly. “When you said you’d give us a try, you meant you agreed, didn’t you?”
Margaret’s cheeks flushed pink. Her heart was tangled in conflict.
Agreeing means binding myself to the mighty Prince Theodore, with no guarantee he’ll stay faithful only to me forever.
What if he grows domineering and refuses to let me walk away if we don’t suit each other?
Yet refusing feels foolish–he’s handsome, powerful, sincere, and genuine.
And I do hold a soft spot for him deep down.
Margaret nodded slowly. “If it’s the private courtship you agreed to just now… then yes, we can try.”
She truly couldn’t bring herself to marry him outright just from a faint fondness.
But if they could spend time together first, to confirm he wasn’t the type to be fickle and that their personalities matched, she might gather the courage to change her plans for the future.
After all, her real ultimate goal was to leave Breston one day and wander the world alone.
Before she could finish her thoughts, Theodore suddenly pulled her into his arms. “Very well, I’ll abide by all your wishes.”
Margaret’s heart skipped a beat at his sudden gesture.
One moment, he’d been cold and reserved, and the next, she agreed, and his whole demeanor shifted completely.
Are all men like this once they start courting someone?
She’d never dated anyone in her modern life, so she had no idea how men changed before and after falling for someone.
She’d never imagined her first relationship would be with an ancient noble prince,
