Chapter 25 A Prince in the Courtyard
Margaret sighed. “So the only way you two survive in this house is by bullying me. Is that it?”
Bullying her for survival?
The maids couldn’t even cry anymore. After that beating, they had nothing left.
Seeing them weep so pitifully, Winter couldn’t help saying, “Miss, they’ve learned their lesson…”
Margaret frowned. “So?”
Winter lowered her head, fear plain on her face.
Margaret continued, “You’re not going to plead for mercy on their behalf, are you?”
Finished
Winter whispered, “They are, after all, Ms. Stella Campbell’s people. If word gets out that you’ve mistreated them, it won’t reflect well on you. So perhaps, Miss, if you expelled them from the estate, that would be… best for everyone…”
Winter’s voice trailed off until Margaret could barely hear her.
“Fine.”
Margaret agreed without hesitation.
Winter blinked. “You agree?”
Margaret’s temperament had changed so drastically today–she hadn’t expected such easy compliance…
But Margaret looked almost pleased. “Works for me. I don’t know what to do with them anyway. Your idea’s not bad. But…”
She glanced at the two on the ground. “They’ve bullied you constantly, haven’t they? Letting them off so easily would be too generous. Here’s the deal–you slap each of them twenty times, make their faces even puffier. Then you can throw them out. I won’t stop you.”
Winter was only sixteen, young and timid. At Margaret’s words, she faltered. “Miss, I… I…..”
“If you don’t do it, I’ll cut out their tongues right now.”
Margaret’s face hardened as she placed the knife on the stone table.
By now, all three knew Margaret meant business–she would indeed cut out their tongues!
The two maids panicked, crawling to Winter’s feet, weeping and pleading.
“Please, Winter–we’re sorry–we’ll never hurt you again—”
“We were wrong–please-”
Winter glanced uncertainly at Margaret, then clenched her teeth and began slapping them hard!
Chapter 25 A Prince in the Courtyard
Fished
The sound echoed through the courtyard. Margaret watched, satisfied.
She watched Winter quietly. I need to toughen this girl up. Otherwise, she’ll never be able to protect herself…
Soon enough, Winter finished.
She turned back weakly. “Miss, it’s done…”
“Then throw them out. I’ll tear up their indenture papers–consider it giving you both a way out. And remember this clearly: Winter saved your lives today! From now on, I don’t want to hear a single bad word about me from your mouths. What you say about Stella, I don’t care–that’s your business.”
She turned to Winter. “Since you feel sorry for them, you can personally escort them out.”
Winter nodded. “Y–yes, Miss.”
She couldn’t shake the feeling that Margaret before her was a stranger–so decisive, so commanding.
And those clean, efficient movements…
Was this truly the lady she remembered?
Once Winter had led them away and the courtyard was empty, Margaret finally relaxed.
She rubbed her temples. So much had happened in just one day. She wondered what further troubles awaited.
“Impressive skills.”
A man’s voice drifted down from above.
Margaret spun around. On a distant rooftop sat a figure–she hadn’t noticed him arrive!
Dressed in black, his tone was light and arrogant. “Skilled in medicine and poison–how did you end up in such a state?”
The voice was familiar. Even from a distance, Margaret recognized him.
It was the man she’d saved in the snowy mountains…
“How did you find me?”
Theodore slowly rose to his feet, looking down at her. “I came because I wanted to.”
