Chapter 28 The Empress‘ Choice
Why was the Empress so insistent on backing her?
Finished
Both she and Stella were legitimate daughters. Either one as Crown Princess should be the same to the Empress. So why push for her?
Perhaps sensing her confusion, the Empress continued, “Don’t overthink it. I’ve said what I needed to say. If you’re willing to continue the engagement, on your wedding day next month, I will absolutely not allow the Crown Prince to act recklessly. Including his plan to have your sister marry alongside you—I will put a stop to it.”
Margaret clenched her jaw. “Your Majesty. My mind is made up.”
“Meaning what? You no longer wish to be Crown Princess?”
“Once, I was foolish enough to chase his affection. Now I see clearly. He and my sister love each other truly. I won’t stand between them.”
The Empress shook her head in irritation. “You refuse a gift most women would kill for.”
Margaret met her gaze. “I do. Please, Your Majesty. Let them be.”
“Are you not afraid of what His Majesty might say?”
The Empress‘ voice turned cold.
“I am a legitimate daughter of the Prime Minister. So is my sister. Originally, she was the one chosen for this match. The circumstances changed. Now they’ve changed back. The Emperor will understand.”
“Leave.”
The Empress waved her hand wearily.
Margaret sighed in relief and rose to go.
But at the door, the Empress‘ voice came again. “I’ll give you ten days. If you change your mind, you may return to me. After that, even regret won’t help you.”
“Thank you for your kindness, Your Majesty.”
Margaret bowed politely and departed.
Only when she’d left the palace did she fully relax.
That woman is dangerous. All smiles and hidden knives.
Despite their lengthy conversation, she still couldn’t fathom the Empress‘ true intentions….
Lost in thought, she returned to where she’d alighted from the carriage–only to find it gone. Margaret’s eyelid twitched.
Chapter 28 The Empress‘ Choice
What now?
They’d sent a carriage to fetch her to the palace, but now that she was leaving, they’d taken it away.
All because her words displeased them?
How petty…
Well, she’d have to walk.
No way was she going back to that smiling snake.
As Margaret left, a chamberlain respectfully approached the Empress.
“Your Majesty, if Margaret truly refuses to be Crown Princess, what then?”
The Empress closed her eyes.
“Margaret is irrelevant. But that sister of hers? Stella will never be Crown Princess. A woman who spent years outside proper society? Who knows what she did, what happened to her? She’s less worthy than a concubine’s daughter. She has no place beside my son.”
Her voice grew cold. “Those bewitching tricks of hers can only fool children. Go tell the Crown Prince: regardless of who becomes Crown Princess, Stella can only ever be a concubine. Granting her the position of secondary consort is already for his sake.”
“Yes, Your Majesty…”
Margaret had no idea how long she’d walked. By the time she finally glimpsed the palace gates, she was drenched in sweat.
Well. There’s tonight’s exercise taken care of.
Just as she was about to exit the palace grounds, a carriage suddenly raced toward her and stopped right beside her.
“Margaret!”
