“Ever since the talk of brigands began, I’ve kept my granddaughter shut up safe at home. I tried my best to guard against them, but in the end, it wasn’t enough. Just a few days ago, my poor girl went missing too.”
She brushed a tear from the corner of her eye. “Lately, folks have been heading to Breston to report these crimes, and I meant to make the journey myself come morning. Funny how things happen–running into you two like this. Tomorrow we can keep each other company on the road.”
With that, she collected their bowls and spoons, still dabbing at her eyes as she shuffled off to wash them.
Margaret glanced meaningfully at Theodore. “What do you think?”
“Brigands roaming this close to Breston is no small trouble,” Theodore replied quietly.
Margaret nodded. “Ever since we entered this village, I’ve felt something strange. I couldn’t place it before, but now I understand–it’s too quiet. Quiet as though no one lives here at all.
“With outlaws about, most would bolt their doors and stay inside. That much makes sense.”

As they spoke, Carol finished cleaning up and led them to a small bedchamber.
“This was my granddaughter’s room. The linens are still fresh. Since you’re brother and sister, you won’t mind sharing for one night, will you?”
Margaret shifted awkwardly. “We truly are siblings, but—”
“It’s fine.”
Theodore spoke up so abruptly that Margaret nearly jumped.
Before she could object, Carol had already stepped inside cheerfully to light a tallow lamp,
“I’ve no other chambers free. You’re close kin–no need to stand on ceremony. Make do for tonight. Tomorrow, I’ll be relying on you both to take me to Breston.”
Bent with age, she adjusted the wick before slowly shuffling out.
“I sleep just across the way. Call if you need anything. We’ve only just met, but you two feel like family already. Still, night has fallen, and I won’t keep you from your rest.”
She paused in the doorway, adding softly, “My granddaughter was near your size, miss. You’ll likely fit into her things. Feel free to look through the chest for something to wear. Don’t be shy.”
Margaret gave a slight nod. “Thank you, Carol. We’re grateful for your kindness.”
“Not at all. It’s rare I have company—it does my heart good. We can talk more when morning comes.”
She lingered a moment longer, her voice lowering. “The village isn’t safe after dark these days. When all is quiet, don’t go wandering about, you hear?”
Once Margaret nodded, Carol returned to her own chamber, seemingly at case

By the faint lamp–light, Margaret looked down at her own attire. No wonder Carol had mentioned her granddaughter’s clothes–hers were torn and travel–worn.
Luckily the wool was dark, disguising the worst of the stains. Otherwise, the old woman might have taken fright.
She glanced toward Theodore, whose tunic and hose were equally frayed. “Shall I ask Carol if she has anything for you?”
“Unnecessary.”
His tone was flat. “As long as it wards off the chill, it serves.”
“Very well. Then… would you wait outside while I change?”
Theodore didn’t answer. He simply turned his back in silence.
Once the door closed, the corridor beyond fell into pitch darkness.
Theodore waited without movement, no trace of impatience in his stance.
Only when the door reopened did he slowly turn around.
At the sight of her, he went still.
Margaret gave a little spin. “Carol’s granddaughter’s gown fits perfectly, as though it were made for me. And the wool is so soft.”
Theodore gave a slight nod. “You look… thinner.”
“Riding and sweating day after day? It would be stranger if I weren’t.”
With a warm smile, she drew him into the room.
“The wind is picking up outside. Come in and rest, and let me see to the wound on your back.”
Theodore pulled his arm away, discomfort in his gesture. “Leave it.”
“I am your healer. Is it not my place to tend your injuries? We were in such haste today, the bandaging was poorly done. Now that we have a moment’s peace, sit still and let me see to it properly.”
