Chapter 185
River chuckled as he pulled the door open. “Let’s try to get through the day without one of us ending up in detention.”
I groaned. “I have that meeting with Ms. Angler after school.”
Knox kneaded a knot in my shoulder as we walked down the hallway. “It’ll be fine. She’s not into giving riveting lectures, but she’s nice. She’ll try to help.”
I hoped so. I did not want to repeat my senior year.
Knox gave me a quick kiss outside my astronomy classroom. “See you at lunch.”
“See you,” I grumbled.
He nipped my bottom lip. “Don’t pout.”
“Easy for you to say.”
Caspian tugged me from Knox’s grasp. “I’ll let you pout all you want. School sucks.”
“I always knew you were my favorite.”
“Hey,” Anson chided.
I lifted a shoulder and then let it drop, a grin playing at my lips. “Guess you’ll just have to try a little harder.”
Anson lunged, taking my mouth in a kiss that scorched me to the spot. Students hooted and hollered in the classroom.
“Mr. Montgomery, I think that’s enough. Ms. Blake needs her face in place to attend class.”
My cheeks burned. “I’m going to kill you for that.”
Anson just grinned one of those cat–got–the–canary smiles. “Worth it.”
River shook his head. “I can see that hoping for no detention today was too lofty a goal.”
We wound our way to our seats next to Ridge and Jack, who greeted us with chin lifts.
Sadie turned in her seat, scowling at me. That scowl melted into a look of concern when her eyes landed on Anson. “How are you, A?”
He blinked a few times. “Fine.”

She scooted her desk closer. “My mom misses you. She asked me to invite you over for dinner tonight.”
Was this chick for real? She was using her mom to try to get in Anson’s pants?
“Can’t tonight, but tell your mom I said hi.”
Sadie gave an exaggerated frown. “She’ll be so disappointed. How about tomorrow?”
“Can’t come tomorrow or the next day either. I wouldn’t go to dinner with anyone who has treated Senna the way you have.”
Warmth flooded my system at his words. I reached out and linked my fingers with his, a silent thank you for his
support.
Sadie’s expression darkened as she leveled me with an angry stare. “She’s going to ruin your life.”
“Watch your mouth,” he snapped. “Having Senna in my life is the best thing that has ever happened to me.”
Sadie’s jaw dropped. “You talk about her like she’s your wife or something.”
“She’s a hell of a lot more than that, and she always will be.”
I meandered down the hallway in the direction of my religion class.
“Stop dragging your feet.” Knox took my hand and tugged me along. “The sooner you get in there, the sooner you’ll be done.”
“But if I don’t go in there, I don’t know how bad things really are.” The words were out of my mouth before I could stop them. Even with all the terrifying things I’d faced recently, the idea of failing a class struck fear in my heart.
Knox halted his progress, moving us to the side of the hallway. His hand slid along my jaw and into my hair. “You’re really worried about this, aren’t you?”
I toyed with the hem of his T–shirt. “What happens if I have to repeat my senior year?”
“It won’t come to that. I promise.”
“How can you be so sure?”
He brushed his lips across mine. “Because you can do anything you set your mind to. You’ve proven that time and again.”
I leaned into Knox. “You always know the right thing to say.”
