“There aren’t assassins out to get me.”
As soon as the words were out of my lips, my gaze locked with Sadie’s livid one. Her eyes tracked over Anson’s arm. Great.
She turned back to her huddle, whispering furtively.
“That’s new,” Caspian muttered.
“What?” I asked.
He lifted his chin towards a head of brown hair in Sadie’s bitch squad. Jasmine. “I didn’t think she was friends with them.”
Knox’s jaw tightened. “She’s not.”
Apparently, I was the common enemy, bringing everyone together. Just grand.
The guys stuck so close all morning that I was almost tripping over them. If I left a class to go to the bathroom, one of them followed. When I’d gotten up to get a Diet Coke at lunch, Knox had escorted me. By the time I made it to English, I was ready to
snap.
“I’ll meet you here, right after class,” Caspian said.
“I don’t need a babysitter,” I snapped.
His eyes widened a fraction. “I know that.”
I took a deep breath, letting it out slowly. “Then, please, stop hovering. I appreciate that you’re worried, but I’m fine.”
Caspian gave me a sheepish smile. “Sticking a little too close?”
“Just a bit.”
“Sorry, I’ll tell the guys to back off a little.”
I gave him a quick hug. “Thank you. I’ll see you at the end of the day.”
I hurried to find my seat, just as the teacher started speaking. Normally I liked English, but today I couldn’t focus. Instead of listening to the teacher’s lecture on Emma, I found my mind wandering to this afternoon. Nerves played a symphony in my stomach, a million possibilities running through my head.
The bell rang, making me blink a few times. It felt as if I’d just sat down. I hurried to gather my book and notebook, and slid them into my bag, not that I’d written anything down today. Maybe I could borrow notes from a classmate,
As I hurried out the door, the whispers started. I looked up to find the eyes of all the students in the hall pointed in my direction. Nausea swept through me as my gaze darted around.

Chapter 55
“Do you think it’s true? She killed her sister?” a girl whispered to her friend.
I jolted at her words, and I caught sight of a poster taped to a locker. I was moving towards it before I could stop myself. It was a black and white yearbook photo of me from my previous school, but scrawled across it in large red letters was MURDERER
My hand shook as I reached it, tugging it down. But then I caught sight of another one. It was the same photo, but written on this one was SISTER KILLER
Bile crept up my throat. Poster after poster lined the hallway. Each one with awful things written on it. I’d never get them all.
“Senna!” Anson shouted.
I didn’t want any more eyes on me. Eyes he would surely bring with him. I hurried down the hall, starting to run as I broke through the front doors of the school. The wind stung my face where tears had been falling without my knowing.
I heard shouts behind me, but I didn’t stop, only pushing my muscles harder. I ran across the parking lot, dipping into a neighborhood next to the school, hoping I’d lose anyone who would follow.
My heart hammered against my chest as I ducked between houses. The sound of an engine had me dropping down behind a car. I watched as Anson’s Range Rover passed. I waited for a minute and then rose. Listening, I counted to ten. When I didn’t hear any
other cars, I made my way back to the sidewalk.
