Screw My Childhood Sweetheart His Alpha Brother Marked Me First novel Chapter 58

My breath hitched.

“All right, Casanova,” Caspian said, dropping a hand to Anson’s shoulder.

I straightened, sliding off Anson’s lap to the couch, and positioned myself between him and Caspian. “How’s Vaughn?

“I’m fine,” Vaughn growled as he entered the room. His eyes narrowed on me. “You should’ve listened to me and run. You could’ve been hurt or killed.”

“I wasn’t going to leave you.”

He prowled forward. “I can take care of myself. You clearly cannot.”

Anson stood, stepping between us. “You need to back off, right now. The last thing Ro needs is someone yelling at her.”

Vaughn’s jaw hardened. “She needs to be yelled at if she has a prayer of surviving the year.”

Knox let out an ear-splitting whistle. “Let’s everyone dial it down a notch.”

Rivercame in carrying a tray covered with snacks. “Let’s eat. Hunger is only making this worse.”

My stomach let out a loud rumble. Anson turned, his eyebrow quirking. “Was that you?”

My hands went to my stomach, pulling the blanket tighter around me. “I didn’t have a lot at lunch.”

Riverwrapped a soft pretzel in a napkin and handed it to me. “Eat.”

“I’ll eat if you guys talk.”

They all looked towards Knox.

I picked at the pretzel. “So you’re in charge?”

He lowered himself to the coffee table so that he was directly facing me, as Rivereased into a chair and Vaughn prowled. “My father is alpha, and I’m second in line.”

“Alpha means leader, right?”

Knox nodded. “Coby is his beta or second-in-command. Sam is his third as head enforcer. But when I graduate, I’ll take Coby’s role and she’ll take Sam’s.”

“And you’ve all always been…”

“Wolf shifters?”

I nodded.

“Yes. We were born this way. Wolf shifters can’t be made. You were adopted, right?”

I stiffened, pushing myself back into the cushions on the couch. “I was, but I don’t turn into a wolf, Knox.”

Caspian squeezed my knee. “The change isn’t triggered unless you’re around other wolves for at least a year. It’s a self-protection thing.”

“But you could be wrong. Why do you even think I could be one?

“We can smell you,” Knox explained.

“Smell me?” I squeaked.

His mouth twitched. “I smelled you that first day I saw you in your window. It was faint, but definitely wolf. Dad and I knew we had to find out if there was a new wolf family in town, but it was just you.”
