Louisa's breath hitched. She didn't answer Thaddeus, and the call eventually timed out, only for the phone to vibrate again immediately. This time, it was Gregory calling.
After a few seconds of hesitation, Louisa stepped aside to take the call. "Mr. Voight, I've listed everything in the handover documents. Are you sure? Fine. I'll come back and help you find it."
When she hung up and looked up, she found Elijah watching her. He was still holding a playing card, while the game at the table continued loudly behind him.
She wondered if the seniors could even play with a missing card.
Thinking of the panic in Gregory's voice, Louisa spoke up. "Mr. Holten, I need to go back to the office."
Elijah's sharp, cold eyes flickered with a trace of nonchalance. "Found a new job already?"
Louisa didn't know what to say. He knew she had resigned, so the question was technically fair, but there was a distinct edge to his tone that made her uncomfortable.
Dealing with his mood swings was exhausting, so she didn't bother getting defensive. "No. There's an issue with the handover at my previous company. I need to go handle it."
Elijah nodded slowly. "Right. Tie up those loose ends."
Louisa didn't want to overanalyze the double meaning behind his words. She was about to tell him she would head out on her own when he spoke again. "I'll give you a lift."
Her first instinct was to refuse. She didn't dare treat a man of his stature like a personal chauffeur. But then she realized she was going to face Thaddeus. Having Elijah there might help.
"Thank you," she thanked him.
She turned to leave, but Elijah's hand shot out, blocking her path. He tapped her nose lightly with the card he was still holding. "Mrs. Holten, you're being so polite that it makes me think you'd rather I stayed behind."
He was far too good at reading between the lines.
"Not at all," Louisa denied.
