Chapter 35 Uninvited
It was Alexander.
He sat back on the sofa with his laptop set aside, his gaze steady, distant, and impossible to read as it settled on her.
Aside from a female staff member, the second floor was empty, yet there was a white designer handbag resting on the sofa nearby. The bag looked familiar, but Camille could not immediately remember where she had seen it before.
So there was another woman upstairs. Camille’s gaze shifted toward the fitting room not far away.
She had just taken a step in that direction when a cool, sharp male voice cut through the air. “It looks like the Hart family could use a refresher on basic manners. Interrupting my fiancée while she’s trying on wedding gowns, is that what Richard taught his daughter?”
Camille froze mid step, suddenly remembering that Alexander was still there.
“I’m sorry, Mr. Kingsley.”
“Oh.”
Alexander’s tone turned thoughtful. “I forgot, you’re not Richard’s biological daughter.”
The thing Camille hated most was anyone bringing up her background.
For years, she had carried herself as the heiress of the Hart family. Everyone knew she was not Richard’s biological child, yet because Richard and Catherine had always favored her, people tactfully avoided mentioning it in front of her.
Alexander, however, had no reason to spare anyone’s feelings. He said it plainly and directly.
And she had no way to refute it.
“Are you still standing there?” he asked.
Camille snapped back to reality. Swallowing her humiliation, she hurried downstairs and left the bridal boutique without looking back.
Only after she was certain Camille was gone did Elena step out of the fitting room
She had heard every word exchanged between Alexander and Camille. The way she looked at him now carried a trace of curiosity.
“Why are you looking at me like that?” he asked, noticing her gaze.
Elena felt puzzled. The way Alexander had spoken to Camille had been sharp and merciless, aimed straight at her pride.
It was completely different from the man standing in front of her now.
If he was only defending a fiancée he had met just a handful of times, was that not a bit excessive?
Still, she could not deny that it had felt satisfying.
“It’s nothing”
Elena smiled at him and turned back to continue trying on gowns.
After leaving the boutique, Camille got into her car. The moment the door shut, her temper exploded. She pounded the steering wheel over and over, the frustration lodged in her chest refusing to ease.
Why does Alexander always seem to have it out for me? The Hart family and Pinnacle Group have never had any conflict.
Is Alexander out of his mind? Would he really fall for a married woman?
She did not know his exact preferences, but since his health was not the best, lighter food seemed like a safe choice,
As she fastened her seatbelt, she did not notice the brief flicker of confusion in his eyes. He quickly understood what she meant by good for your health, gave a short response, and started the car.
It was close to dinner rush, but the restaurant was members only, so it was not crowded
A hostess led them inside. Just as they were about to enter a private room, a voice called out behind them.
“Elena?”
Please tell me this is not happening.
Elena’s back stiffened. She turned around slowly, and unfortunately, it was happening. Nathan stood at the entrance with Victor and Victoria, and Camille was with them.
Seeing her standing beside Alexander, Nathan’s face filled with shock.
Camille’s expression was even stranger.
Victor, however, quickly replaced his surprise with an overly enthusiastic smile. “Mr. Kingsley, what a pleasure. I’ve heard so much about you. I’m Victor from Hawthorne Group.”
He stepped forward and extended his hand.
Alexander lowered his gaze and glanced at Victor’s ingratiating smile, making no move to shake his hand.
Victor awkwardly rubbed his palms together and withdrew his hand. Then he turned to Elena. “Elena, how did you end up here with Mr. Kingsley? You never mentioned anything.”
