Resting her chin on one hand, Melanie was stressed. Should she use her 'Schrödinger's Pill' account on the PharmaNexus Forum to offer paid consultations? Ten thousand bucks a pop?
Melanie shook her head. People would definitely think she had gone mad for money. Plus, it was way too inefficient.
Melanie worried in silence, and Preston watched her in silence. Though Melanie hadn't explained much to him, he could guess what she was thinking.
Melanie didn't want to owe him too much. Because they were no longer a couple. Therefore, Melanie couldn't comfortably use his money, even if he offered it willingly.
Preston didn't want to put too much pressure on her. If he pushed too hard and Melanie wouldn't even let him be her assistant anymore, the loss would far outweigh the gain.
Just as he was thinking this, Preston's phone suddenly rang. It was Gabriel calling. Preston gripped his phone and stepped outside the office to answer.
'Preston, Dad's back from his business trip. Mom said she wants us both home for dinner tonight, back at Royal Crest Manor.'
'Alright, I got it.'
After work, Preston first drove Melanie back to her place. Originally, when Melanie heard Preston say he had to go home for dinner with his parents, she told him he didn't need to go out of his way to drive her home. But Preston insisted on fulfilling his duties as an assistant, and Melanie couldn't out-stubborn him, so she agreed.
Dropping Melanie off and then driving to Royal Crest Manor meant traveling from the extreme east to the extreme west. As a result, it took Preston quite a while extra to get there.
'The young master is back!' As soon as Martha saw Preston return, she quickly reached out to help him take off his black suit jacket.
In the living room, Frederick, Marjorie, and Gabriel were all there.
'It's rare for me to cook personally today, and Preston actually shows up late. What work could possibly be this important?' Marjorie deliberately teased with a smile.
Preston being late because he was dropping Melanie off—didn't that imply his parents weren't as important as his woman?
If Marjorie got a bad impression of Melanie because of this, thinking she wasn't dutiful enough and was stealing her son away before even marrying into the Whitmore family, making her unworthy of being a Whitmore daughter-in-law... then his sin would be massive!
Gabriel clutched his head with both hands, frantically backpedaling. 'Mom, I misspoke just now! My brother definitely wasn't late because he was dropping off Melanie!'
As soon as he finished, he couldn't resist slapping his own mouth. What did it mean to make things worse the more you tried to explain? This was exactly it!
Shrinking his neck, Gabriel sneaked a peek in Preston's direction. Preston's face was as black as a turned-off phone screen.
The atmosphere at the dining table suddenly grew tense. Both Frederick and Marjorie had stern faces, especially Marjorie, who was staring intently at Preston with utter seriousness.
