The words were out of her mouth, but Preston's expression didn't change at all. The dark storm on his sharply chiseled face showed no sign of dissipating.
Melanie felt completely ungrounded. How on earth did Preston manage to overhear her phone call with Elias? And of course, he had to hear the exact worst part.
Seeing Preston remain silent, simply staring at her with eyes as deep as the night sky, Melanie couldn't help but quietly complain, 'Who asked you to pop up like a ghost every day...'
'You need thirty million dollars?'
Hearing Preston finally speak, Melanie was stunned. She hadn't expected him to not be jealous over Elias, or blame her for saying those things to him, but instead ask about her needs first.
'Yeah.' Melanie nodded. 'The Carter Group currently has a targeted drug in development. I want to buy it, package it as a joint research project between the Royce Group and Stellaris, and bring it to Sebastian York for clinical promotion.'
Listening to Melanie's explanation, Preston nodded silently. Currently, Stellaris PharmaTech didn't have a targeted drug in development, and it was even more impossible for the Royce Group to have one. But Melanie had already pitched this project to Sebastian York, and to cover her lie, she needed exactly this kind of targeted drug.
'So Elias asked you for thirty million? Talk about daylight robbery.'
Melanie smiled bitterly at that. 'It is the Carter Group's targeted drug, after all. It's worth that price. Also, maybe... he just figured you'd pay for it for me anyway.'
'I will pay for it.' Preston agreed without a second thought.
Thirty million dollars wasn't quite the 'drop in the bucket' that Elias had exaggerated it to be for Stellaris, but it certainly wasn't a price they couldn't afford.
However, Preston observed that Melanie didn't look very happy.
'That's it.'
Preston's indifference caught Melanie completely off guard. 'Aren't you supposed to... smack a black card down on my desk and tell me there's thirty million on it for me to spend however I want?'
Preston couldn't hold back a laugh. 'Do you want me to smack it down for you right now?'
'Never mind.' Melanie waved her hands frantically. She had already decided to rely on herself. It was just that Preston really didn't fit her stereotypical image of a domineering billionaire boss.
'But seriously... where on earth am I going to get that much money?'
