Leaning back against the throw pillows with both her legs resting across Preston's lap—anyone walking in would have instantly noted the heavy, undeniable intimacy in the air.
A warm flush crept up Melanie's cheeks.
"You said just a leg massage,"
she reminded him, trying to keep a strict expression on her face.
Preston offered a soft, devastating smile, his dark, mesmerizing eyes catching the light like polished obsidian.
"Where else did you think I was going to massage?"
"You..."
The flush on her face deepened.
Thankfully, she was wearing pants today, so his gloved hands weren't making direct contact with her bare skin.
Even so, her heart hammered wildly against her ribs, and her blood felt like it was simmering in her veins.
What was wrong with her?
Was she just wildly touch-starved lately?
Melanie pressed her lips together.
In truth, Preston was on his best behavior. He was genuinely giving her a phenomenal leg massage.
"If the shoes are uncomfortable, I'll buy you a new pair tomorrow."
"No, no."
Melanie waved her hands frantically.
"It's not the shoes. I just haven't worn heels that high in ages. My legs were bound to ache."
"That's my fault. I should have bought you a lower heel."
Seeing his genuine look of self-reproach, Melanie couldn't suppress a small smile.
He really treated her incredibly well.
A blind person could see how deeply he loved her.
A sweet, soothing warmth bloomed in her chest.
But...
She quietly exhaled, her anxiety creeping back in.
Was her mother's accident four years ago connected to Stellaris PharmaTech and the Whitmore family?
So far, aside from Stellaris PharmaTech's involvement in the VitalBreath Fortis project, she had hit a brick wall. There were no new leads.
Was it really this impossible to uncover the truth?
Lost in her frustration, she unconsciously kicked her legs in annoyance.
"Don't squirm..."
But they were two adults alone in a quiet space, and the sexual tension was constantly teetering on the edge of combusting.
Melanie scrambled off the sofa.
Before Preston could say another word, she practically sprinted into the kitchen.
Preston had been racking his brain for an excuse to extend his stay.
He just wanted to be near her for as long as possible.
Since she had retreated to the kitchen, he figured he was safe from eviction for at least a little while longer.
As expected, Melanie emerged a short time later, carrying two steaming bowls.
"I haven't gone grocery shopping in days, so we're just going to have to make do."
Preston approached the dining table and peered down. It was two massive bowls of Braised Beef Linguine.
"This isn't making do."
Melanie glanced over, noting how his eyes lit up with sheer delight.
"To me, this is a Michelin-star feast."
Melanie burst out laughing.
"Okay, that is aggressively dramatic."
While she was fairly confident in her cooking, a basic bowl of pasta without so much as a garnish of greens was hardly a gourmet masterpiece. He was looking at her through some seriously thick rose-colored glasses.
