Preston didn't bother defending his statement. He simply sat down and dug in.
Watching him devour the food with such enthusiasm made her own portion taste infinitely better.
"Are you out of Lychee Spritz too?"
he asked halfway through the meal.
Melanie nodded.
"Yeah. I haven't had time to restock."
"Why don't we... go on a massive grocery run tomorrow?"
"Who says I'm going with you?"
Melanie fired back, though she didn't mean a word of it.
"I have to stare at your face all day at work. I'm sick of it. Tomorrow is my only day off, and I'm spending it with Daphne."
Preston looked down, a soft chuckle escaping his lips.
He knew she was just being difficult. He wasn't the least bit offended; if anything, he found her stubbornness incredibly endearing.
"You said it yourself, it's a rare day off. Are you really going to third-wheel Daphne and Everett on their date?"
The comment struck a chord. Melanie suddenly remembered that Daphne wasn't just her dedicated sidekick anymore.
She wasn't single. She had a boyfriend to entertain.
"Ugh..."
Melanie propped her chin on her hands, pouting in defeat.
"Daphne would never ditch a friend for a guy!"
It sounded good out loud, but deep down, she knew Daphne and Everett desperately needed time alone to build their relationship.
As a good friend, she couldn't selfishly monopolize Daphne's weekend.
"Which means... you'll just have to settle for grocery shopping with me."
Hearing his smug tone, Melanie glanced down and realized he had completely polished off his bowl, right down to the last drop of sauce.
"Are you still hungry?"
"A little."
"Let me make you another bowl."
She stood up, but Preston immediately caught her hand.
"Don't. I don't want you tiring yourself out."
