Everett rocketed off the couch, staring at Preston in sheer, unadulterated horror.
Preston sat back, his expression cool and utterly indifferent, looking as though the victory meant absolutely nothing to him.
Catching the devastated look of defeat on Everett's face, Melanie let out a soft chuckle.
"Don't stress over it. Pick a new fighter and try again."
She had meant to be encouraging.
Instead, her words landed like a fatal blow, completely crushing whatever fragile spirit Everett had left.
Because...
That had been his twenty-third match against Preston.
He had already switched characters twenty-three times.
And every single time, he had been violently, mercilessly slaughtered.
Preston didn't look like he knew the first thing about fighting games.
And yet...
He was an absolute goddamn monster.
Everett was on the verge of a full-blown mental breakdown.
It was bad enough he couldn't compete with Preston in the real world. Losing to him in a stupid video game was just insulting.
A suffocating wave of despair and inferiority crashed over him.
Daphne stepped out of the kitchen right behind Melanie. Noting Everett's miserable expression and the giant "KO" flashing on the screen, she quickly connected the dots.
"Step aside, babe. Let me show you how it's done. I'll avenge you!"
Daphne swaggered forward, ready to roll up her sleeves and go to war.
Then, remembering she was supposed to be a demure girlfriend, she quickly smoothed her shirt down and coughed awkwardly.
Everett handed over the controller in defeat.
He knew Daphne meant well and just wanted to defend his honor.
But honestly, if his girlfriend managed to beat the guy who just humiliated him twenty-three times in a row, he was going to look even more pathetic.
Everett let out a long, depressed sigh.
Two minutes later, Daphne's aggressively confident button-mashing ended in a savage KO.
Damn it!
She practically bit her tongue to keep from swearing.
Preston's gameplay was terrifyingly fluid.
Watching from the sidelines, Melanie's competitive streak flared to life.
"My turn. Pass the controller."
