There was sweet and sour fish, crispy roast duck, sticky BBQ Ribs, and a massive platter of garlic butter oysters.
Everett's eyes practically bulged out of his head.
"Did you guys... actually make all of this?"
"Melanie did all the heavy lifting!"
Daphne immediately bragged on her best friend's behalf.
"She tackled all the complicated stuff. I just acted as her sous-chef."
"Stop selling yourself short. You cooked a couple of dishes too," Melanie argued playfully.
The four of them gathered around the table and dug in.
Melanie quickly realized that Everett was exclusively inhaling the food she had cooked. He hadn't touched a single thing Daphne had made.
"Everett, why don't you try some of the vegetables?"
Melanie suggested pointedly.
"They look a little... charred,"
Everett muttered thoughtlessly.
Beside him, Preston casually reached out with his fork, scooping up a bite of the potatoes.
"It tastes excellent. You can tell a lot of effort went into this."
"Really?"
Daphne practically vibrated with excitement, her eyes shining.
"Yes, really,"
Preston confirmed with a nod.
Seeing her best friend so visibly thrilled, a warm smile spread across Melanie's face.
"Looks like you have quite a refined palate. Daphne made those potatoes herself."
Melanie grabbed a forkful of her own, chewing happily.
In reality, the dish was borderline inedible.
To Preston's standards, it belonged in the trash.
But he knew Daphne had poured her heart into making it, and she deserved the praise.
More importantly, he knew complementing her friend would score him massive points with Melanie.
While three of them happily enjoyed the meal, Everett sat there, suffocating in his own awkwardness.
He hadn't realized the burnt, heavily vinegared disaster on the plate was his girlfriend's creation.
