Cough! Cough, cough...
Melanie Royce nearly choked to death on her mouthful of lemonade.
"Are you okay?"
Daphne Morrell hurriedly handed her a napkin.
Melanie took it, wiping her mouth and waving her hand dismissively.
"I'm fine, I'm fine. I was just startled."
Daphne offered a bitter smile.
"If Everett heard you say that, he'd be crushed."
"And if he's crushed, you'll be heartbroken again."
"Exactly!"
Daphne threw her hands up, letting out a helpless sigh.
"But there's nothing I can do. You can't control matters of the heart. I'm in love with Everett, but he's in love with you..."
The more she spoke, the more bitter her expression and tone became.
"That's why I'm incredibly jealous of you, Melanie."
Daphne looked at her, entirely serious.
Melanie didn't avoid her gaze, listening intently.
"But..."
Daphne suddenly hung her head low.
"But you're my best friend! And you knew Everett first. Even though I knew he liked you, I still..."
"It's all my fault. I selfishly fell for him, and then I selfishly resented you. I feel like such an awful person."
"So... I wanted to apologize first. I might get even more jealous in the future, but I promise I will never let that jealousy hurt you or ruin our friendship. Please believe me!"
Seeing Daphne holding up her hand in a solemn vow, Melanie offered a touched smile.
"Daphne, you said you don't believe I envy you, but do you have any idea how rare your honesty and genuine nature are? Most people don't have that."
"Well..."
