For Everett, that was a massive expense.
It was obvious that he was doing some serious damage control after his inappropriate outburst the day before.
Melanie hadn't just been trying to placate Daphne earlier.
She truly didn't believe Everett harbored genuine romantic feelings for her.
At the very least, it wasn't love.
It was more like an unyielding obsession with the unattainable.
"Daphne, what do you actually like about Everett?"
Caught off guard by the question, Daphne froze, rubbing her chin as she fell deep into thought.
"Well... he's stood up for me before. He's a good guy, honest and dependable, and... he's not bad to look at either!"
After listing his qualities, she looked down bashfully, a shy smile gracing her lips.
Seeing her reaction, Melanie knew Daphne was genuinely happy right now.
At the very least, being in love with Everett brought her immense joy.
They enjoyed the rest of their lunch in high spirits. Melanie felt that occasionally indulging in fiery, spicy food was a necessity.
Who cared about breakouts or whether it was bad for digestion...
The immediate satisfaction was worth it.
"Alright, I need to head back to the office. Do you feel better getting all that off your chest?"
Melanie reached out with both hands and gave Daphne's cheeks an affectionate squish.
"Come on, I'm wearing makeup today! You're rubbing off my foundation."
Chuckling at her friend's protests, Melanie pulled an item from her handbag and offered it to her.
"Here. I accidentally bought the wrong brand of foundation anyway. It's yours."
Daphne took the bottle, narrowing her eyes suspiciously.
"You're just finding an excuse to give me gifts again. You bought this specifically for me, didn't you?"
"What?" Melanie arched an eyebrow. "Only Everett is allowed to buy you things now? Choosing boys over your best friend?"
"Okay, okay, I'll take it! Listen to you."
