"I know you weren't trying to force me to buy the dress."
"Everett..."
"I wanted to buy it for you. You don't need to stress over it."
Gazing up into his eyes, Daphne felt a radiant warmth spread through her chest, entirely soothing her jagged nerves.
Seeing the immense relief wash over her features, Everett allowed himself a quiet mental sigh.
Buying the gown really was his choice.
He simply hadn't wanted to see her humiliated in front of Melanie and the sales staff.
However, he was terrified she would misinterpret the gesture as an impending proposal.
He opened his mouth to clarify, but the words withered on his tongue, locking tightly behind his teeth.
Everett didn't feel like he was deeply in love with her.
But he felt a profound sense of responsibility toward her.
Since he had committed to this relationship, he had to fulfill the basic duties of a devoted boyfriend.
"Oh right! I completely forgot to show you something."
While he was drowning in his own conflicted thoughts, Daphne suddenly bolted over to the wardrobe and threw the doors open. Catching herself, she ran back, grabbed his hand, and dragged him over to look.
"You mentioned before that staying over here was a hassle because you'd have to wear the same suit to work the next morning! And you didn't have any pajamas or a change of underwear here, so..."
She threw her hands out like a game show host, presenting the interior.
"Ta-da!"
Everett's eyes widened slightly in surprise.
Hanging neatly inside were three bespoke suits in different shades and cuts.
Even at a glance, the premium tailoring and expensive fabrics screamed high-end luxury.
Alongside the suits were several crisp dress shirts, two sets of silk pajamas, and an entire drawer stocked with fresh underwear, socks, and ties.
He knew exactly what this meant; she had gone out of her way to curate an entire wardrobe just for him.
Seeing him staring blankly into the closet without a trace of joy or anger, Daphne's confidence wavered.
After a few agonizing seconds of silence, she rushed to backpedal.
"Hey, don't get the wrong idea... I'm not trying to force you to move in or secretly cohabitate or anything. I just wanted you to have a change of clothes in case you ever decided to stay over..."
"Yeah, I get it."
