Though Everett honestly laid out every detail of his family and career for Richard Morrell, Daphne couldn't help but notice the grim set of her boyfriend's jaw.
Was Everett... mad?
A sickening wave of anxiety washed over her. She knew she had handled this recklessly. From start to finish, she hadn't been entirely truthful with him.
When she initially texted Everett, she simply mentioned that her uncle was visiting Averin for some business and a bit of sightseeing.
Richard had always been good to her, and she wanted to treat him well, so she asked Everett to help plan an itinerary.
She deliberately avoided the phrase "meeting the family" because she was terrified it would scare Everett off.
But the deepest truth was—
Daphne was terrified of rejection.
If she explicitly asked him to officially meet her family and he shot her down on the spot...
Just the thought of it made her chest tight with suffocation.
Throughout the evening, Everett answered all of Richard's questions with polite honesty.
Judging by Richard's expression, her uncle was clearly thrilled with Everett's answers.
But what about...
What about Everett?
Daphne hadn't seen him crack a single smile.
They were at an upscale seafood buffet, surrounded by delicacies, yet Everett had barely touched his plate.
"Not a fan of seafood, Everett?" Richard asked warmly.
Everett shook his head.
"My stomach has just been a little off lately."
"Is it from drinking too much at networking events, or is work stressing you out? You might be young, but you still need to take care of your health!"
"I will. Thank you, Richard."
Richard beamed.
"Such a polite young man. But there's no need to be so formal with me."
Everett didn't respond to that.
He simply lowered his gaze and quietly picked at the food on his plate.
