After work, Everett was driving home when his phone rang. It was Daphne.
She wanted to grab dinner together.
Looking back, Everett realized Daphne was always the one initiating contact.
Had he ever been the one to ask her out first?
He honestly couldn't remember.
Surely he had... right?
Daphne had already booked the reservation and sent him the location. He just plugged it into his GPS and headed that way.
As he drove, his mind inevitably drifted.
He kept replaying what Jonas had said to him.
*Rip the Band-Aid off.*
Everett had always considered himself someone who could just settle and make peace with things.
But...
Just coasting along with Daphne.
Eventually settling for marriage...
Was that really the right move?
Would the two of them actually be happy?
His head was spinning with all these hypothetical questions.
They had been tormenting him for days.
He knew the answer deep down, but he simply refused to admit it.
Ultimately, he was just reluctant to let go.
He wasn't reluctant to lose Daphne.
He was just reluctant to give up the comfort of having a girlfriend.
Whether that girlfriend was Daphne or someone else...
It didn't really matter to him.
Suddenly, as he was making a turn, a car sped straight through the intersection.
The two vehicles collided with a deafening crash.
The night was pitch black.
Melanie accompanied Daphne to the hospital. Daphne was so terrified that all the color had drained from her face.
Melanie tried to comfort her the entire drive.
"If he was able to call you himself, it means he's fine. Going to the hospital is just protocol for insurance purposes. Don't panic, we're almost there."
