"You viewed her as your consolation prize from day one. And you have the nerve to stand there and tell me she wasn't your backup plan?"
Hit by the relentless barrage of Melanie's interrogation, Everett couldn't form a single word in response.
He had always believed he was the good guy. He thought he was doing the honorable thing. But hearing it from Melanie... he realized how incredibly toxic his actions were.
"If you didn't want her, you shouldn't have agreed to date her in the first place."
"Once you agreed, you should have tried to build something real."
"But you didn't. You just accepted the title of 'boyfriend,' contributed absolutely nothing emotionally, soaked up all her love and care, and acted like you were the one making some massive sacrifice."
Her rage boiled over. She looked ready to rip him apart with her bare hands. Seeing her raise her hand again, Everett shrank back, hunching his shoulders in fear.
Melanie took a slow, deep breath and dropped her arm.
"Losing you is the best thing that ever happened to her."
With that, she reached into her designer bag and pulled out a thick stack of cash.
Everett stared at it in shock.
"This is the money you gave her for the wedding dress. She told me to return it."
Melanie shoved the cash violently against his chest, not caring if he was ready to catch it.
He stood frozen. The words 'wedding dress' felt like a physical knife twisting into his heart.
Then, he watched as she pulled a velvet box from her bag.
"Here's the jewelry you gave her. Consider it returned... not that there's much of it anyway."
