Most importantly...
Melanie had always been the heir Nathaniel had chosen for the company.
It was just that she was incredibly rebellious and constantly drove him up the wall.
"Fine, fine."
Nathaniel waved his hand in utter defeat.
"I won't press the issue of his termination. However... I am going to arrange a new position for him. I won't keep him at headquarters; I'll send him down to one of our manufacturing facilities. Does that satisfy you?"
Melanie remained silent as she listened to his proposal.
She could tell that demoting Everett to a factory was the biggest concession her father was willing to make.
If she pushed any harder, the situation would only become irreversibly gridlocked.
True, she didn't possess some deep-seated, blood-feud hatred for the man.
But Everett’s treatment of Daphne had absolutely crossed her bottom line.
She was determined to make him suffer the consequences.
"You can place him there, but even at the plant, he is not to hold an executive title. Otherwise, I'll fire him all over again."
Melanie’s tone was absolute, turning Nathaniel’s face an unsightly shade of purple.
"How did I end up with such an unreasonable daughter?!"
Melanie absorbed his harsh criticism without batting an eye.
She wasn't going to change her mind, and she certainly wasn't going to soften her stance.
She was going to get justice for Daphne, whatever it took.
Striding purposefully out of Nathaniel’s office, Melanie turned the corner and immediately spotted Preston Whitmore leaning against the wall.
It was obvious he had been waiting specifically for her.
Preston had already heard the news about the breakup.
He also knew it was Everett who had unilaterally dumped Daphne.
Watching Melanie's stormy expression, Preston kept his voice low and smooth.
"Got yelled at?"
Melanie curled her lip in annoyance.
"My dad is unbelievable. If I didn't know better, I'd think Everett had saved his life!"
"He did."
Hearing Preston say that, Melanie finally remembered the history—Everett hadn't saved her father, but Everett's father certainly had.
She let out an exasperated sigh and rubbed her temples.
