Even though Everett had accepted Daphne's confession, Melanie had seen right through it—he wasn't actually in love with her.
As her best friend, Melanie knew she should have warned Daphne a long time ago.
She should have told her not to date him.
But she could never bring herself to be the one to burst that bubble.
She knew exactly how deeply Daphne was infatuated with him.
She also knew how ecstatic Daphne had been when he finally agreed to be hers.
At the time, Melanie had genuinely believed that since he accepted her, he would treat the relationship with the respect it deserved.
After all, he had always played the role of the reliable good guy, and his work ethic was meticulous.
She never could have imagined that his so-called "meticulous work ethic" meant treating his role as Daphne's boyfriend like just another corporate task he was obligated to complete.
One person was pouring her entire soul into the romance, while the other was treating it like a 9-to-5 job.
A relationship built on that foundation was doomed from the start.
Melanie should have recognized it immediately and warned her friend.
Or, at the very least...
She should have threatened Everett early on, warning him not to play games with Daphne’s heart.
But...
Would a warning have even worked?
It probably would have just backfired and made things messier.
Nursing her beer, Melanie wrecked her brain trying to make sense of it all.
But no matter how she spun it, every train of thought led to a dead end.
Telling Daphne not to date him felt wrong.
Letting them date felt equally wrong.
No matter how she looked at the situation, Melanie couldn't shake the heavy guilt that she was partially responsible for her best friend getting dumped.
When her glass ran dry, Preston smoothly intercepted the bottle before she could reach for it, refilling her drink for her.
Melanie looked up at him through a slightly hazy, alcohol-fueled gaze.
"Why aren't you trying to talk me out of this?"
He always knew exactly what was running through her head.
It was like he was hardwired into her brain; she couldn't hide a single thought from him.
