Everett had just finalized his onboarding paperwork.
This new position, of course, had been orchestrated by Nathaniel.
Originally, Everett had planned to politely decline the offer out of pride.
But factoring in his age and resume, he knew that stepping away from the Royce Group and Nathaniel's protection meant he'd likely never find a job with the same level of prestige.
So, he swallowed his pride and accepted Nathaniel's generosity.
By staying under the company umbrella, he could at least remain closer to Melanie.
And by being closer to Melanie...
He would inevitably be closer to Daphne.
The second that thought crossed his mind, he physically recoiled.
Why would he actively want to be closer to Daphne?
He was the one who had just broken up with her.
He was the one who had dumped her.
By now, she probably never wanted to see his face again.
The realization sent a sudden, jarring spike of panic through his chest.
Standing outside the manufacturing plant, he couldn't stop himself from dialing Melanie's number.
He wasn't sure if she knew that her father had arranged for him to re-enter the company's ranks.
Even though he was stationed at a factory rather than headquarters, he was still technically a Royce Group employee.
He wanted to break the news to Melanie himself.
He was terrified that if she found out later, it would cause another massive fight between her and her father.
Simultaneously, he desperately wanted her to pass a message to Daphne.
He still felt that the returned gifts were something he shouldn't accept.
Something he refused to accept.
But when the call immediately failed, the realization that Melanie had blocked him too hit him like a ton of bricks, leaving him groaning in frustration.
"Well, there goes my only way of contacting her..."
The words slipped out before he even processed them, freezing him in his tracks.
It wasn't that he wanted to call Melanie to give her a career update and casually mention Daphne.
He wanted to use his new job as a convenient excuse to call Melanie, purely so she could connect him with Daphne.
