Was it fate playing a cruel joke?
Or just terrible luck?
Daphne was half a second away from turning around and bolting out the doors.
She felt Melanie give her hand a firm, reassuring squeeze, signaling her not to run away.
Taking a slow, silent breath, Daphne felt her racing heart gradually settle back into a rhythm of calm logic.
"I didn't expect to run into you here. You really are like a lingering ghost."
A cold smile spread across Melanie's face as she launched the verbal attack without hesitation.
Standing across from them, Everett's lips parted, but he couldn't find the words. He pressed his mouth into a tight line, remaining completely silent.
Seeing the two women at the arena in Emberton was just as shocking and unexpected for him.
His gaze involuntarily drifted past Melanie and landed squarely on Daphne.
Today, she was dressed in a comfortable black tracksuit paired with silver-gray sneakers, her long hair pulled back into a high ponytail. She looked vibrant, fresh, and radiant—
Completely different from the way she had styled herself when they were together.
Everett had assumed that running into him would make them curious about why he was there.
So he waited in silence, expecting them to ask.
Instead, they treated him like he was entirely invisible. Neither of them said a word to him.
The heavy silence and the sheer indignity of being ignored gnawed at him. It was a miserable feeling.
He took a step forward, wanting to initiate a conversation with Daphne, but Melanie suddenly called out.
"Director York!"
It was Sebastian.
Melanie grabbed her friend's hand and pulled her toward him.
Away from Everett.
Everett was forced to snap his mouth shut.
Sebastian was dressed in his usual pristine white coat, his dark-rimmed glasses resting on the bridge of his straight nose. He exuded an air of scholarly refinement and elegance.
"Ms. Royce, Ms. Morrell, you got here even earlier than I did!"
As he greeted them, Sebastian immediately noticed the tension on their faces.
