"I love spicy food too! Looks like we have the exact same taste," Sam declared before chugging a massive glass of iced lemon water.
Melanie watched him from the sidelines, barely suppressing a laugh.
Sam might not be lying when he said he liked spicy food, but there was a massive difference between liking it and actually being able to handle it.
When they first ordered, Sam had enthusiastically recommended the restaurant's signature spicy broth, which came in three heat levels. He had suggested the mild version. But when Daphne glanced at the menu, she murmured to herself, "They have an extreme spice level? I wonder how hot that is. I really want to try it."
It was a quiet comment, not meant for anyone else, but Sam heard it. When it was time to order, he opted for a split pot: one side mild broth, the other side extreme spice.
When the bubbling crimson pot arrived, Daphne realized he had ordered the highest spice level. She was so thrilled she practically bounced in her seat like a kid on Christmas.
Melanie could easily see that Sam had ordered the extreme heat specifically to win Daphne over. Honestly, when Sebastian mentioned earlier that Daphne might be on the verge of a new romance, Melanie thought he was joking. But looking at them now, Sam was making his moves loud and clear.
It was good for her, Melanie mused. Daphne's luck in love seemed to be turning around after ditching Everett. A rebound could help her sharpen her instincts and learn how to spot a good guy.
With that thought, Melanie's gaze shifted back to Sam. His lips were already swollen into two bright red sausages. The extreme spice was clearly tearing him apart, but to prove he shared Daphne's tastes, he forced himself to keep eating from the blazing half of the pot, his face flushed scarlet as he continuously downed water.
