Staring at him sprawled across her hood and listening to his absurd, childish threat, Melanie actually found it somewhat amusing.
"I haven't washed this car in months. It's covered in dirt."
She pointed out matter-of-factly.
It was an exaggeration, of course.
But even if she had just pulled it out of a car wash, the exterior still wouldn't be as spotless as his pristine, head-to-toe white ensemble.
Posing like a ridiculously overpaid car model, it was obvious he couldn't care less about ruining his expensive coat and trousers.
"Come on, Angel. It's just dinner. I promise I won't eat you."
He practically purred, laying the charm on thick.
Melanie knew full well that dining alone with Shawn wouldn't result in her being literally eaten alive.
But the consequences could very well be infinitely worse.
"I already have plans. Rain check."
She dismissed him with a casual excuse.
"With who?"
His eyes instantly hardened into a sinister glare.
The latent, ever-present danger that shadowed him flared to life, cutting through the air like a brutal winter gale.
Melanie instinctively tugged her scarf tighter around her neck and smoothly lied.
"My assistant, who also happens to be my ex-boyfriend. Why?"
When cornered by a predator like Shawn, bringing up Preston was pure instinct. Preston was the only one capable of offering her absolute security.
Lowering his gaze, Shawn lapsed into a heavy silence.
A toxic, unnerving tension twisted through the space between them.
Suddenly, he snapped his head back up, that flawless, innocent smile completely restored.
"Then I guess I'll just sit here forever."
He gave her a smug, defiant look that clearly said, *'Let's see what you do about it.'*
Melanie just laughed.
"Really? Forever?"
