The metallic tang of rust blossomed across his tongue, sending an inexplicable surge of dark excitement racing through his veins.
"Now that's what I call fun."
At the Eclipse Noir Club.
Daphne Morrell noticed that Everett Kingsley had shown up again today.
Ever since Sam Harrison had boldly confessed his feelings to her right in front of him—and she had accepted—she constantly caught glimpses of Everett lingering outside the club's entrance.
At first, Daphne assumed he had something he desperately needed to tell her.
She deliberately avoided striking up a conversation, even when they inevitably made eye contact as she walked out the doors.
And Everett remained dead silent, the two of them treating each other like absolute ghosts.
But as the days dragged on, Daphne felt her patience wearing dangerously thin.
She was going insane trying to figure out what his game plan was.
If he really had something important to say, he'd had dozens of opportunities to say it, yet he never once initiated contact.
It was as if he had lost his voice entirely, content to just stand outside Eclipse Noir and stare at her like a tragic statue.
Everett had never been a man of many words.
Daphne knew that better than anyone.
Even when they were actively dating, she had always been the one driving the conversation.
Especially on the days when she dropped her polished, sophisticated persona, she would ramble a mile a minute, an endless fountain of energy.
He never interrupted her, nor did he ever show a single trace of annoyance.
But looking back now, Daphne wondered if he had merely been tolerating her endless noise all along.
He was the type to internalize everything, overly accommodating and far too polite to ever point out her flaws.
So, seeing him standing there in total silence didn't exactly shock her.
But...
Seeing him chain-smoking was genuinely jarring.
As far as she remembered, Everett did know how to smoke.
But it wasn't a daily habit.
He had certainly never lit up in front of her during their entire relationship.
