Surprise flickered in Everett’s eyes as Daphne stopped right in front of him. He hadn't expected her to initiate a conversation. For days, he had been waiting outside the Eclipse Noir Club, watching her come and go. Sometimes they made eye contact. Sometimes she simply walked past him, fully aware of his presence but choosing to look right through him. Her cold indifference was exactly what he had anticipated. He never expected a warm reception. After all, Daphne had a new boyfriend now. He was just the ex. The ex who had left things on incredibly bitter terms. He had braced himself to be ignored indefinitely. Yet, here she was, breaking the silence. Did this mean she still had a lingering shred of feelings for him? Everett couldn't be sure. A turbulent wave of emotion swelled in his chest. Even if she did care, it surely wasn't romantic anymore. She had already fallen for someone else. That realization hit him like a physical blow, twisting his features into a pained frown.
Daphne stared at him, already feeling a headache coming on. She had gone out of her way to talk to him, and he was just standing there in mute agony. Seeing his tormented expression, her annoyance gave way to a flicker of panic. "Everett, what's wrong? Are you sick?"
Snapping out of his daze, Everett realized how close she was. He could clearly see the genuine concern in her wide eyes. Did that mean she really didn't harbor any romantic feelings for him anymore? "Daphne..." His voice trembled the moment he spoke. He said her name, but the rest of the words died in his throat. He wanted to ask if she truly felt absolutely nothing for him anymore. But the question remained wedged behind his teeth. He couldn't force it out. What was the point? He would only get a soul-crushing 'no' in response.
Daphne furrowed her brow, utterly baffled by his hesitation. He was always like this—bottling up a million words but refusing to just say what was on his mind. Unable to stand the stifling, awkward tension between them, she pressed him. "What exactly do you want to say to me?"
"I..." Everett stammered. "I just... wanted to see you. To see if you were doing okay."
A bitter laugh escaped Daphne's lips. He had ruthlessly dumped her, shattered her heart, and now he was playing the concerned friend? If she wasn't doing well, it was entirely his fault. "As you can see... I'm doing great." She threw her arms open, flashing a bright, confident smile. Even if she didn't entirely feel that way on the inside, she refused to look anything less than triumphant in front of him.
Instinctively, Everett's gaze swept over her. She was wearing a thick, black fleece tracksuit—a very standard, casual design. Historically, Everett despised tracksuits. He never liked seeing women wear them.
