He wouldn't let Melanie see him at his absolute lowest. He turned his head away, forcing the raw emotion back down his throat. The regret was eating him alive. He couldn't believe he had ever viewed Dominic as a brother. When Melanie had first warned him to watch his back around Dominic, he had been highly skeptical. Sure, recent events had strained his blind loyalty, but he had never truly believed Dominic would try to completely usurp the Lockridge empire.
Then his grandfather was moved to the convalescent home, and everything went downhill. His health steadily declined. The lab results showed nothing alarming, but his mental state was completely shot. At first, Gavin figured since he had been suspended from the company anyway, he might as well use the free time to take care of his grandfather. So, he essentially moved into the facility, completely tuning out the corporate world.
Holden Lockridge seemed to have simply succumbed to old age. Since arriving at the home, he was lethargic, sleeping more than twelve hours a day and showing zero interest in the family business. By the time Gavin finally snapped back to reality, Dominic had already executed a massive corporate purge. Countless employees were laid off, and every critical leadership role was filled with Dominic's loyalists. The Lockridge Group was a shell of its former self. It might as well have been rebranded as the Hale Group.
Gavin felt like an exiled prince from a conquered dynasty. And this decaying convalescent home was his prison. He hadn't said a single word of this to Melanie, but she read the situation perfectly.
"Can I see your grandfather?" Melanie asked, standing up.
"You can, but he's asleep," Gavin warned.
Melanie had expected as much. She was already on her feet, and Gavin certainly wasn't going to stop her. He led her down the hall to Holden's room. Through the observation glass in the door, Melanie watched the elderly man. He was sleeping heavily, his chest rising and falling in a deep rhythm.
"Are his vitals normal?" Melanie asked, keeping her eyes fixed on the man through the glass.
